‘Cultivating Sustainability’ Event at Mount Union Delves into the Local Foods Scene

October 17, 2016

ALLIANCE, Ohio – On Monday, October 24 in the Gallaher Theatre in the Giese Center for the Performing Arts, the University of Mount Union will host a Sustainability event aimed at educating the campus community about what local organizations are doing to cultivate sustainability in our region and how they can get involved.

Attend this free and public event and connect with Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) and other organizations who are committed to providing and enhancing sustainable food production, food education and food distribution in our area. Learn about how a sustainable, organic farm operates and discover the critical role the larger community plays in these sustainability efforts.

There will be a Sustainable Foods Fair from 6-7 p.m. where guests can meet and mingle with local organizations and learn more about the resources and services they provide. From 7-8 p.m., Phil and Mindy Batholomae from Breezy Hill Farm will provide a short program and Q&A session about their journey becoming sustainable, organic farmers in Homeworth, Ohio. Come and learn about their experiences, processes and how they differ from traditional industrial agriculture and leave with a better understanding of the importance of supporting local farmers and the role they play in creating and maintaining a sustainable community.

This free event is sponsored by the Sustainability Management Advisory Committee (SMAC) at Mount Union and is open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Contact Jamie Greiner, Sustainability and Campus Outreach Manager, for more details at greineja@mountunion.edu or (330) 829-8161.
