Solar Tour to Feature The MAAC
October 1, 2010
The McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (The MAAC) will be one of the sites on the 2010 Stark County Solar Tour on Sunday, October 3 from 1 to 4 p.m.
The Stark County Solar Tour, as part of the eighth Annual Ohio Solar Tour conducted by Green Energy Ohio and the American Solar Energy Society, will be held Saturday, October 2 through Sunday, October 3 at various locations throughout Stark County. Beyond solar energy, the statewide event features simultaneous tours in all corners of the state and highlights over two hundred sites with solar, wind, biomass, green design and energy-saving technologies.
Above the Peterson Field House within the MAAC is a 54 kW photovoltaic solar array system. It is currently generating enough electricity to power several average size homes, and is the largest single solar array in the state of Ohio. The solar panel system is also generating most of the energy that powers the fitness center, which is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The fitness center includes 16 flat panel televisions, 16 treadmills and 14 ellipticals.
The tour provides a unique opportunity for people to visit sites and talk with owners living and working with clean energy technologies. Stops on the tour on Saturday will include Towns’ Residence, Shondrick Residence, Grabill Residence, Grabill Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Meniru Professional Building, Stark Parks and Baylor Beach. The tour route on Sunday will include the University of Mount Union, Little’s Residence, Stark Parks, Cespedes’ Residence, Shondrick Residence, Albertson Residence, Funk Residence, Grabill Residence and Grabill Plumbing & Heating, Inc.
During the tour on Sunday a vendor exhibition will held in the MAAC. There will be various technology demonstrations and technical representatives will be available to answer questions related to wind, solar and renewable topics. The MAAC is located at 480 W. Hartshorn St.
The Solar Tour will provide information on how individuals and businesses are trimming their energy bills and increasing their energy independence.
