52nd Annual ArtFest is Saturday

ArtFest LogoALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union will host its 52nd annual ArtFest from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 17 around the Campus Lakes.

Sponsored by Mount Union and the Alliance Chamber of Commerce, ArtFest will feature original works by area artists in various media including watercolor, oil, collage, graphics, drawings, fine and functional crafts, photography, jewelry, pen and ink, sculpture, glass mosaics, printmaking and mixed media works.

{To date, this year’s ArtFest will feature 40 art and functional craft vendors, including Paris Studios, Valerie Buynak, Shonda Causey, A Touch of Elegance, Mr. McGillicutty Art Studios, K’s Accent, Dream in Color Jewelry, CR Beads, Kari’s Crafts & Jack of All Trades, Rmae Photography, Karole Longbrake Painter of Movement, Maiown, Wonderful Wishes, Boomdyada, Fabric Evolution by Amy H. Miller, Salamander Dreams, A Mellow Life, Bonnie L. Myers, Fabric Pottery, Jeffrey Piper, Lakeside Arts, Mad Metalwerk, Savanna Rowe, Brian Snyder Photography, Simple Home Accents, Spike's Wood Crafts, Calico Cabin Pottery, Painting Turtle, Cheryl's Studio/Urban Romantic, Cutting Board Art, The Armored Gem, Joe Toporcer, Jennifer Worden Arts, Olive Branch Ministries Kettle Corn, Kyle Beecher Photography, Bead my Bridle, Natalie Ettinger, Fogtrees, Bebop Beads and Troll Hole Museum,}

 Live artist demonstrations will take place throughout the day, including Jeff Piper, ceramics artist, and broom-making artists Keith and Jessie McMahon.

In addition, “A Taste of Alliance,” coordinated by the Alliance Chamber of Commerce, will take place simultaneously, featuring food and beverages for sale by area restaurants and caterers.

Entertainment will be provided throughout the day by Mount Union and Alliance area musicians. Adam Infantino, a Mount Union student, will perform from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., followed by a Mount Union theater performance from 11:30 a.m. to noon. Rock, Salt & Nails will conclude performances.

This year, ArtFest and Alliance Early Learning Center will host a children’s activity from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in which children can create their own masterpieces. Their works will be displayed at the Children’s Gallery from 3 to 5 p.m.

Jurying of fine arts will occur from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s judge is Jamie Kirkell, an artist who specializes in large floral paintings, fine art hand-painted silk scarves and printed fine silk scarves. A former United States Peace Corps Volunteer, Kirkell apprenticed under Indonesia Batik Master Bambang Oetoro, an experience that has proven to be the major influence in his life and work. Upon returning to the United States, he opened a silk painting studio in New York City, and is now currently located in Sarasota, Florida. Kirkell's work is displayed in galleries around the world.  The fine arts award ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.

Cash awards and ribbons will be presented to the top artists in each category, as well as a Best of Show.

This year's ArtFest will be held in conjunction with Mount Union's Family Day and the Mount Union vs. Marietta football game.
