"A Work of Heart" Celebration Honors Mount Union College Volunteers
April 01, 2010
Mount Union College presented the first ever "Volunteering... A Work of Heart" celebration, on April 10 to recognize the service leaders of Mount Union College.
Jim Collins, host of the event, performs on the guitar.
The event celebrated and recognized students, faculty, and staff of the college community for their service work. The program began with a lighthearted introduction to the evening by Jim Collins, assistant professor of sociology and host of the evening.
The event was created and directed by Ellen Giordano, who is the VISTA (Volunteers In Service to America) service leader for Mount Union. "I have had a great time this year serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA in the office of service-learning and community service at Mount Union," said Giordano. "I enjoyed seeing our Mount Union students realize how important serving others can be."
Through service-learning classes, student groups and organizations, special events and other projects (both on and off campus), the faculty, staff and students of Mount Union College have completed more than 25,000 hours of community service this year.
Mayor Toni Middleton and Mount Union College President Jack Ewing spoke at the event.
Mayor Middleton of Alliance, spoke on behalf of the Alliance community expressing thanks and saying, "Mount Union College volunteers are a major portion of our civic community."
In addition, President of Mount Union College Jack Ewing expressed his gratitude saying, "Mount Union College volunteers light up the Alliance community. They learn that the way they grew up is not how everyone has grown up. They leave Mount Union committed to making their community better place."
Several students also addressed the audience with words of gratitude expressing how much volunteering has touched their hearts. Sophomore David Gross of Alliance said, "Volunteering is more than just doing a task for someone who needs it, it is making a difference. Thank you for allowing me to be out in the community."
