The Board of Trustees, comprised of 50 to 60 individuals who serve as active, honorary, or emeriti trustees, has ultimate authority for general, academic, and financial policy-making functions and the corporation’s financial health and welfare. Its members exercise ultimate institutional authority as defined by its bylaws and in such other policy statements it deems appropriate and operates within the mission statement of the University. These bylaws and other Board policy statements shall take precedence over all other institutional statements, documents, and policies.
There are three classifications of Board of Trustees members at Mount Union.
Active trustees are elected to the Board and serve in a policy-making role. More specifically, they provide financial support and management, represent the University to the public, assure the maintenance of the physical plant, serve as a court of final appeal, assess the institution’s performance, and have administrative accountability for the Office of the President.
Emeriti trustees are those persons who have served with distinction as active trustees for an extended period, and upon the expiration of their term or for other reasons, are no longer able to serve in an active role but wish to remain informed and offer counsel to the governance of the University.
Honorary trustees are those persons whose association with the University in this capacity can provide stature and expertise, either because of their past affiliation with Mount Union as a trustee or administrator or because of their reputation in the educational, business, or government service communities.
