Academic Life

The Liberal Arts Education

Mount Union students are expected to take courses in a variety of subjects. These courses form the basis of a well-rounded education, which is sometimes called a liberal arts education.

International students are sometimes surprised and dismayed when they realize that they are expected to take courses that they feel are totally unrelated to their fields of interest or specialization.

Although the liberal arts education may be quite different from the education in many of your home countries, it is highly regarded and seen as beneficial for the overall intellectual and interpersonal development of students, and for attaining the variety of skills necessary to live and work in an ever-changing global society.

Course Selection

Students are asked to decide upon the type of courses to take before they arrive on campus. That enables the registrar to set up a preliminary schedule, and changes can be finalized after meeting with faculty advisors and taking proficiency examinations in mathematics or foreign languages. During Mount Union Orientation there will be special presentations and workshops familiarizing international students with the concept of a 'liberal arts education,' and suggestions on how to plan a balanced curriculum.

Language and Academic Support

All international students are encouraged to take advantage of the language and academic support services offered by Mount Union. The staff of the Student Success Center provides programming to help students adjust to the requirements of the Mount Union academic environment. In addition, peer learning assistants trained by the Student Success Center are available to lead study groups or offer individual tutoring.

The Digital, Written and Oral Communication Studio also provides tutors to work across the curriculum with all students, international and native speakers. Some tutors are trained to focus on the specific issues of multi-lingual writers.
