Alliance Area Relay for Life Comes to Mount Union
April 01, 2010
Mount Union College hosted the Alliance Area Relay for Life as an overnight event in the Peterson Field House on March 31 to April 1.
Mount Union seniors Leah Beegan, an exercise science of Cambridge and Sara Stevens, a sport management and business administration major of Gibsonia, PA organized this year's event and helped bring it to the College campus.
"I was really encouraged by the turnout for our Relay. It was great to see so many students together to raise money for the American Cancer Society,' said Stevens. 'Our volunteers were amazing; the Relay wouldn't have happened without their hard work. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better night and can't thank all those involved enough.'
The effort raised a total of $55,245 for the American Cancer Society, with the students alone raising $10,803.
There were thirty-five MountUnion teams and fifteen teams of community members contributing to the walking effort. Awards were given out to the team with the best banner (Alpha Delta Pi) and the student organizations that raised the most money (Psi Chi and Alpha Tau Omega).
The volunteers contributed many hours to entertaining the walkers and keeping them awake throughout the night. They held activities such as a karaoke contest, a male beauty pageant and a frozen t-shirt contest.
Donations can be made through August 31 to the American Cancer Society, 925 S. Main St., North Canton, Ohio 44720. Please indicate that the contribution is for the Alliance-Mount Union Relay.
