April 5, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Alliance Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and the University of Mount Union will present a Solo con Tutti concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 15 in the Alliance High School auditorium.

The performance will showcase solo performances by the 2011 Concerto and Aria Competition award recipients including pre-college performers Patrick Zhang and Yunsang Cho and community award winner and Alliance resident Karen Perone.

In addition to accompanying the soloists, the 70-member community and student orchestra will perform Edward Elgar’s Military March in D Major and Dance Rhythms for Orchestra by Wallingford Riegger. The ASO is under the direction of conductor Eric Benjamin.

Patrick Zhang, a junior at Revere High School, will perform the first Movement from Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16. Medina area student Yunsang Cho will perform the first movement from the Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor by Camille Saint-Saëns.

Alliance resident Karen Perone is a librarian at Rodman Public Library and a flutist with the Canton Concert Band, Tuscarawas Philharmonic and Carnation City Players. She also is founder of FluteBrarian Web Design and serves as president of the Alliance Historical Society. The ASO will accompany Perone on Poem for Flute and Orchestra by Charles Griffes.

The concerto competition showcases the exceptional talent of area musicians and the unique opportunity to perform with a community orchestra. Each participant is required to perform one or more movements of a standard concerto, vocal aria, single movement work or a concert piece with orchestral accompaniment.

Senior tickets are $8 each, adult admission is $10 and children and students are free. Arts in Stark and Alliance Concert Association cardholders receive a two for one ticket price at the door. For more information visit www.AllianceSymphony.org or call (330)829-8102.
