Alliance Symphony Orchestra to Present Concert

April 05, 2013

ALLIANCE, Ohio—The Alliance Symphony Orchestra (ASO) and the University of Mount Union will present a Solo con Tutti concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 in the Alliance High School auditorium.

The performance will showcase performances by the 2012 Concerto and Aria Competition award recipients Yuka Suzuki and Mount Union junior music performance major Ian LeRoy of Orwell, OH. Suzuki, a pre-college winner, moved to Ohio in 2011 from her native Japan, where she began her piano studies at the age of eight. LeRoy acts as a student accompanist at Mount Union and is this semester’s vocal coach and assistant music director for the University’s production of Company.

Copley-Fairlawn Middle School student Suzuki will perform the first movement of Piano Concerto #1 in G-Minor by Felix Mendelssohn in the first half. LeRoy will perform the first movement of Edward MacDowell’s Piano Concerto #2 in D-Minor in the second half.

Along with accompanying Suzuki, the community- and student- based orchestra will perform Carl Maria von Weber’s Overture to Der Freischutz, Richard Wagner’s Funeral Symphony on Themes and Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral, also by Wagner, in the first half.

The second half will consist of Op. 92, LeRoy’s performance and Prelude to Die Meistersinger by Wagner.

The annual Solo con Tutti competition is a collaborative effort between the University of Mount Union and the Alliance Symphony Orchestra, which is directed by music lecturer Eric Benjamin, to showcase the exceptional talent of area musicians. The competition highlights the distinctive opportunity to perform with a community orchestra. Each participant is required to perform one or more movements of a standard concerto, vocal aria or concert piece with orchestral accompaniment.

Tickets for the concert are $10 and students are free with student ID. For more information, visit or call (330) 829-8102.
