Alpha Tau Omega Cuts Their Hair for Cancer

April 05, 2010

“ATO Cuts for Cancer” will be held on Monday, April 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Alpha Tau Omega house on Mount Union’s campus.  Each brother of the fraternity will be collecting donations with an overall goal of $5,000 to be donated to Relay for Life.

Last year, two brothers from ATO shaved their heads at Relay for Life after reaching their goal donation amount.  “We wanted to expand from just two members shaving their heads to the entire chapter,” said Adam Hood, a junior business administration major from Barberton, OH. “The more people involved, the more money and awareness that is being raised for the cause. Each year we want to raise the bar and elevate to the next level, and this event is no different.”

Each member of the fraternity that chooses to participate will receive a haircut. Haircuts will be based on the amount of money each brother raises as follows:

$50 -- Shaved Head

$75 -- Mohawk

$100 -- Blonde Mohawk

$150 -- Top-Shave

$200 or more -- The brother’s top donor will choose the hairstyle

On Monday, the brothers of ATO and top donors will be cutting and dyeing participants’ hair.  The brothers will be sporting their new hairstyles to raise awareness until Relay for Life concludes on Saturday, April 10.

Getting these haircuts was a difficult decision for some, but they quickly realized how much they could help the American Cancer Society.  “It was a difficult decision, but once I took a step back to observe the cause, I realized it was a small sacrifice to make,” said Donnie Houck, a sophomore geology major from McDonald, OH. Houck’s personal goal is $200.

Hood hopes the new hairstyles can bring donations and awareness to campus. “These are men who are known on campus and will be wearing these hairstyles during the remainder of the week to class, meetings and off-campus.”

The hair-cutting ceremony is free and open to the public. During the ceremony, attendees can enjoy an evening filled with food and games.

Relay for Life will be held on Friday, April 9 and Saturday, April 10 in the Peterson Field House on Mount Union’s campus.
