Alumni Weekend and Homecoming Celebrated

ALLIANCE, Ohio — University of Mount Union graduates from near and far attended events on campus to commemorate Alumni Weekend and Homecoming on Saturday.
The weekend’s events began on Friday with the annual Mr. UMU competition.
Saturday began with the annual Run-A-MUC 5K Race and 2-Mile Fun Run/Walk. Male winners of the race were Ty Griffin, first; Erik Reed, second and Andrew Kallay, third. Female winners were Meredith Deichler, first; Megan Deichler, second and Heidi McIlvain, third.
Following Run-A-MUC, a Kid’s Race was held for children 7 and under.
The annual Alumni Brunch honored the recipients of the Dodie Davis Alumni Service Award and the McKinley Fellow. This year’s recipients of the Dodie Davis Alumni Service Award are Pamela (Snode ’73) Boone and William Schumacher III ’82.
Boone, a native of Alliance, OH, joined the University of Mount Union staff in 1990 and currently serves as the coordinator of direct mail in the Office of Admission.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from Mount Union in 1973. Following graduation, she taught elementary school for 15 years in central and southern Ohio. She is a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Alumnae Association and the Zoar Community Association.
Schumacher, a native of Canton, OH, is a 1982 graduate of Mount Union where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration and a minor in psychology. He has worked in the banking industry since he graduated from Mount Union. Currently, Schumacher serves as vice president of commercial lending at Premier Bank & Trust. Schumacher is active in his community, serving on the board of trustees for the Crisis Intervention and Recovery Center, Inc., the Massillon Development Foundation and the Stark Development Board Finance Corporation as well as the advisory councils for Akron Children’s Hospital, Perry Local Schools and the Massillon Automobile Club Safety Patrol Trust. He also serves as a member of Mount Union’s Executive Board of the Alumni Association.
This year’s recipient of the McKinley Fellow Award is Rodney Peterson. Peterson, a native of Beloit, OH, joined the Mount Union staff in 1989, and since then has served in a variety of capacities on the University’s campus. He has served as associate director of food services, director of food services and, most recently as director of auxiliary services. He is a member of the National Association of College Auxiliary Services and the National Association of College and University Food Services.
Other events during the day included an alumni author book signing and a ribbon cutting at the newly-renovated Phi Kappa Tau house. Alumni sporting events included a volleyball game and swim meet and an alumni baseball game was held on Sunday afternoon.
Prior to the football game against Capital, a Homecoming parade was held. During halftime of the football game, Travis Irwin, a marketing major of Sebring, OH and Michelle Porter, a biology major of Akron, OH were named Mount Union’s 2012 Homecoming King and Queen.
A number of alumni reunions were held throughout the weekend on campus and in Alliance including sociology and criminal justice, Black Student Union and communication gatherings. A faculty art exhibit featured the work of current faculty members.
