Alyssa King Named Newman Civic Fellow

April 26, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — University of Mount Union senior Alyssa King has been named a 2012 Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact.

King, an intervention specialist major of Twinsburg, OH, was among 162 students from 32 states to be honored. The Newman Civic Fellow Award recognizes inspiring college student leaders who have worked to find solutions for challenges facing their communities.

Through service, community-based research and advocacy, the 2012 class of Newman Civic Fellows are making the most of their college experiences to better understand themselves and the root causes of some of the most pressing social issues.

King demonstrates the type of civic engagement that sets an example for others. On and off campus, she is a leader and mentor to others. She has mentored youth through Hiram House Camp, SPARK, Dowling Mentor Program, America Reads, America Counts, Alliance for Children and Families, the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center and the Humane Society, among others. King has spent time working with students in more than five schools and plans to continue this involvement through next year and the rest of her life.

As a Newman Civic Fellow, King will join a network of Fellows around the country. Together — sharing ideas and tools through online networking — the Fellows will leverage an even greater capacity for service and change, and will continue to set examples for their classmates and others.

“These students represent the next generation of public problem solvers and civic leaders. They serve as national examples of the role that higher education can — and does — play in building a better world,” said Campus Compact Board Chair James B. Dworkin, chancellor at Purdue University North Central.

Campus Compact is a national coalition of almost 1,200 college and university presidents—representing some six million students—who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. For more information about the organization and the award, visit
