MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY

Not a number
At Mount Union, you are not a number.  Professors know your name, your personality and your strengths by the first few weeks of school.  I am the type of student who likes to ask questions and talk to my professors.  At Mount Union, I can go up to a professor and he or she will say, “Hi, Alyssa” instead of looking at me like they have no clue who I am. 

Transition to college
I was shy. My mom thought the First Year Experience (FYE) program would help me break out of my shell and make my transition to college easier.  At first I was hesitant, but I am extremely grateful that I participated in the program. I honestly wish we could have continued living in the same residence hall with the same group of students during my sophomore year.

Building a community
My favorite part of being in the FYE program was the community we built.  I lived in Cunningham and we all knew each other. We could just walk into each other’s rooms and have a conversation. We could confide in each other and we helped each other with homework.  Knowing students in four of my classes who participated in the FYE program made it easier to talk to students. We even formed study groups within FYE, which was extremely beneficial to learning the material. 

FYE – an awesome experience
I would encourage prospective students to actively participate in the FYE program. It’s an awesome experience.  It makes the transition from high school to college easier.  It does not matter whether a student is shy or outgoing, ready to leave home or not ready to leave at all … the FYE program is for everyone.   The activities that are offered encourage meeting new people and at the same time having fun.  Students will find their place within the FYE program and make lifelong friends. 

Helping others
Since I was young, I have always wanted to become a teacher.   As a senior in high school, I volunteered in a first grade classroom.  Ten out of the 20 students had individualized education plans, and I quickly became interested in helping children with learning disabilities.

Ultimate career goal
I would ultimately like to become a math intervention specialist for elementary aged children.  The students who struggle with mathematics would get pulled out of class to work with me in a separate classroom where I can give them individualized attention. Eventually, I would like to become a principal of an elementary school where I can have a positive impact on a larger population of students.
