Alliance Symphony Orchestra to Perform October 22

October 12, 2011

Eric Benjamin and Dr. Maira LiliestedtThe Alliance Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will present its season-opening concert on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. in the Alliance High School Auditorium.
According to conductor Eric Benjamin, the choice of programming of the concert will present a new highpoint for the orchestra, which is comprised of Mount Union faculty and students and members of the community. The program will feature Beethoven's iconic Fifth Symphony and Franz Liszt's dazzling Piano Concerto No. 1 featuring pianist Dr. Maira Liliestedt, associate professor of music at Mount Union.

The Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1 provides no shortage of pianistic pyrotechnics to underscore its intricate interplay between soloist and orchestra. Liszt was perhaps the best and most famous pianist in history, and his compositions attempted to go beyond what was previously thought possible at the piano. Also a groundbreaking orchestral composer, Liszt couples the scintillating writing for piano with brash orchestral statements.

The monumental Beethoven Fifth Symphony is one of the cornerstones of orchestral music. Beethoven's genius is displayed in the passionate orchestral sweeps, powerfully varied emotional statements and in the development of the legendary opening four-note motive. That striking opening theme, perhaps signifying fate knocking at the door, is used to connect all four movements in an effectively cohesive whole.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and seniors ages 65 and older are admitted for a discounted price of $8. Tickets are complimentary for children and students. Arts in Stark and Alliance Concert Association cardholders receive two for one ticket price. Tickets will be sold at the door. The Alliance High School Auditorium is located at 400 Glamorgan Street in Alliance.
Upcoming ASO concerts include the ASO Big Band holiday concert on Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Union Theatre and a spring concert on Sunday, April 15 at 3 p.m. in the Alliance High School Auditorium. The spring concert will feature solo performances by the 2011 Solo con TuttiCompetition winners.
