ASO to Present 'Sound of Russia'

September 25, 2013

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Alliance Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will present the “Sound of Russia” at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 6 in the Alliance High School Auditorium.

“It’s big, robust, spectacular sound that allows the orchestra to draw the audience into an elegant, energetic musical world,” said Eric Benjamin, conductor of the ASO.

The program will feature vibrant music by 20th century composers with names such as Prokofiev, Stravinsky and Shostakovich, as well as the grand master of 19th century Russian music, Tchaikovsky.

Sergei Prokofiev is best known for the children’s classic Peter and the Wolf but his suite from the film score for the satirical comedy Lt.Kije  is also popular, especially the lively musical sleigh ride known as “Troika. Mount Union senior music performance major Ian LeRoy of Orwell, OH will conduct the five moment suite, making his debut as an orchestra conductor. LeRoy’s primary experience has been as music director for musical theatre and a pianist. He has led music in shows at a variety of venues across northeast Ohio and performed as soloist with the Alliance Symphony in the first movement of Edward Macdowell's Piano Concerto No. 2 last spring.

“Learning to conduct is a long, hard road. Ian is a very talented guy and the Alliance Symphony can be proud that we’re giving him this initial experience,” said Benjamin.

Also on the program are two short pieces by Igor Stravinsky – his Scherzo a la Russe and the Lullaby and Finale from the ballet The Firebird. The program will finish with the Violin Concerto in D by Peter Tchaikovsky.

ASO concertmaster Bohdan Subchak, lecturer of violin at Mount Union, will step up to perform as soloist with the orchestra. A native of Ukraine, Subchak studied at the College of Music and the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory of Music in Kiev. He performs as a member of several orchestras in Ohio and West Virginia and has been on the faculty at Mount Union since 1999.

“Bohdan is a consummate musician and a master violinist,” said Benjamin. “It’s a privilege for us to perform this masterpiece with him.”

Tickets to the event will be available at the door. A post-concert reception to meet and greet the performers will be held in the lobby following the program. The concert sponsor is Goris-Meadows Insurance Agency.
