Assistant Director of Academic Marketing

Position Reports to: Director of Academic Marketing


Fundamental Objectives of this Position:

The assistant director of academic marketing is responsible for supporting the director of academic marketing in administering all academic-related initiatives of the Office of Marketing, specifically as they relate to undergraduate and graduate programs. The position is an integral part of positioning the academic quality of the institution through developing strategy related to communication through social networking, video production, and website development through the University’s Content Management System (CMS). The assistant director reports to the director of academic marketing and must be able to interact and communicate effectively with colleagues and all constituents of the institution, particularly members of the faculty.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages assigned academic programs by:
    • Developing and implementing strategies and processes that support the overall academic program marketing strategy
    • Acting as the point person to requests and inquiries from the department chair and faculty members
    • Soliciting and obtaining information and content required for implementation of the academic program marketing strategy
  • Designs academic marketing materials and works with internal and external printers to ensure job completion
  • Writes copy for a variety of purposes including scripts, publications, the website and e-mail communication
  • Develops and implements short and long-term goals, objectives, policies and procedures regarding media relations, social networking and video production as it relates to the academic program marketing strategy
  • Implements marketing-related tactics via social media outlets, video productions and web content as defined by the academic program marketing strategy
  • Works in conjunction with the brand marketing social media team for idea generation/sharing and scheduling of messages
  • Supports the brand of the University by ensuring the use of target messaging in social networking efforts, video production, web content print publications and other marketing efforts
  • Designs functional web pages for the Mount Union website, including accompanying interactive elements such as photo galleries, video, graphics images, animation, virtual tours, blogs, polls, quizzes, surveys, etc. through the University’s Content Management System (CMS) as defined by the academic program marketing strategy
  • Identity’s emerging trends in social media as they become available and implementing them through Mount Union’s social networks
  • Works in various capacities in the video production process including visioning, scripting, shooting, editing and scheduling
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the director of academic marketing
  • Participates in University compliance training as communicated by the University or the Vice President of Marketing

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Coursework, experience or demonstrated knowledge of marketing and communication principles
  • Versatile writing skills
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with all types of social media
  • Excellent organizational, analytical and communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, especially demonstrated in working with faculty, students and staff
  • Ability to contribute independent thought while working on collaborative teams
  • Ability to communicate with various levels of users to understand and resolve issues
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends in addition to the regular day

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates should hold at least a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communication or a related field; One to three years of experience in a marketing/communication-related role is desired, preferably in higher education.  A demonstrated knowledge of marketing principles, social media and copywriting and editing is essential. Desirable attributes include excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and organizational skills as well as the ability and enthusiasm to learn new systems and techniques and to work in a team environment.  This position is a 12-month position. Evenings and weekend work will be required for special projects.
