MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
A life choice
For me, it was a life choice. My entire family is in the military, so I was either going to enlist in the armed forces right away or become an officer. I really wanted to go to college and have the whole college experience, instead of heading straight into the Army after high school. I chose to attend Mount Union because it was close to home and it was a good school with criminal justice and Army ROTC programs.
Criminal justice
I’ve always known I wanted to go into law enforcement, which is a big reason why I decided to major in criminal justice. I want to prevent future crimes from happening, and I want to know everything I can about law and justice. Plus, I thought criminal justice would prepare me for my ultimate career goal of becoming an FBI agent.
Personal attention
What sets Mount Union apart from other colleges and universities is the personal, one-on-one attention students receive in the classroom.
Visiting a prison
Every student who takes introduction to criminal justice has to participate in a field experience. You can choose from shadowing a public defender, visiting a courtroom, touring a prison facility or riding along with a police officer while on patrol. I decided to tour the Trumbull County Prison, but don’t worry, a prison guard was with me at all times. I got to visit the psych ward and the women’s ward as well as see some of the inmates play basketball.
Camaraderie
There are about 15 students in the Army ROTC program at Mount Union. We do a lot of things together including physical training sessions, classes and labs. It has really built camaraderie among us.
Advice
If I had to give advice to a prospective student about college in general, I would tell them that Mount Union is a great choice if you want a small atmosphere with more hands-on experience. And, criminal justice is a good major. So, if you dream of going into law enforcement, this is a great place to start.
