April 06, 2010
Tom Brockman '04 and Laura Vesco '05 have both begun their professional media careers reporting news for WNCT, a CBS affiliate in Greenville, NC.
Brockman, who serves as a general assignment and investigative reporter, began working for WNCT in January 2005 and has already received two North Carolina Associated Press Awards. One award declared him the 'Rookie of the Year' of North Carolina's news reporting and another honored his investigative story into the dangers of buying prescription drugs over the Internet from foreign pharmacies.
'Receiving these awards gives me confidence and satisfaction that I'm doing my job to the best of my ability and also gives me the desire to work harder," said Brockman. 'While awards like these are wonderful to receive, you cannot lose sight of the work you have left to do and must make sure you are on top of your game and be ready for anything.'
Brockman had the opportunity to travel to WJTV of Jackson, MI, to report the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He reported news of storm damage, long lines at gas stations and power outages from a sister station in the gulf region to be sent back to his home station in Greenville.
'My experience in the gulf coast region was a very fulfilling experience and one which allowed me to grow much as a reporter,' said Brockman. 'It was an experience I will never forget."
Vesco, who began in March 2006 as a general assignment reporter, also won two prestigious awards in national news competitions while a student at Mount Union. As a junior, Vesco won the Judge's Award for Best Featured Reporting in a small radio market from the Associated Press of Ohio. In her senior year she won Best of Show for a public affairs program she hosted and produced from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists.
Both Brockman and Vesco are excited to be working together in North Carolina after completing their undergraduate educations together.
'It was wonderful to have both Tom and his wife (Jessica Schneider '04 Brockman) in the area. They have been a great support system,' said Vesco. 'He was here a year before I started and I am learning so much from him.'
As media studies majors at Mount Union, Brockman and Vesco were both active members of the campus radio station, WRMU 91.1FM. Vesco served as news director for two years and program director during her senior year. Brockman worked as a news talent.
Brockman and Vesco also interned with WEWS News Channel 5, the Cleveland ABC affiliate while in college.
