As 2011 comes to a close, it gives the University of Mount Union an exceptional opportunity to reflect on all the advancements that were made during the past year.

In an effort to enhance the diversity of the University of Mount Union’s campus community while exposing students to an array of cultures, ideas and values, a minor in Chinese has been added to Mount Union’s curriculum.

The sounds of the Big Band Era will fill the Mount Union Theatre on Saturday, December 10 at 7 p.m.

Ten University of Mount Union students recently became official members of AmeriCorps. In October, the full-time undergraduate students took a pledge to complete 300 hours of community service over the span of 365 days through the Students In Service Program.

Author Khaled Hosseini will be featured at the Schooler Lecture at the University of Mount Union on Thursday, October 27 at 8 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (The MAAC). The lecture will be in the format of a moderated discussion led by Dr. Doug Hendel, professor of theatre at Mount Union. Hosseini, a native of Afghanistan, is the author of two New York Times best sellers – The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

A faculty recital featuring Robin Tryon and Brent Schloneger will be held Friday, October 28 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

Students in Dr. Kevin Meyer’s Abnormal Psychology course at the University of Mount Union in Alliance, Ohio, will be able to take their study of phobias to a whole new level.  In this case, up to 42 stories above the ground.

Jeff Gauger, executive editor of The Repository, will speak at the Continued Learning Program on Tuesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. in Campus Grounds of the Hoover-Price Campus Center on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

The University of Mount Union has been recognized as one of the most environmentally responsible colleges as it was included in The Princeton Review’s Guide to 311 Green Colleges: 2011 Edition. Mount Union also is one of only eight institutions in Ohio to be praised for its strong commitment to environmental friendly policies, practices and academic offerings.

The Alliance Symphony Orchestra (ASO) will present its season-opening concert on Saturday, October 22 at 7 p.m. in the Alliance High School Auditorium.

Kaitlin Petrilli and Marcus Williams were named the University of Mount Union’s 2011 Homecoming Queen and King during the halftime of the Mount Union vs Marietta football game on Saturday, October 8.

The John T. Huston–Dr. John D. Brumbaugh Nature Center of the University of Mount Union will hold “Relax and De-Stress” on Sunday, October 9 from 1 – 5 p.m. 

International author and consultant, Dr. Rich Allen, presented an interactive workshop Green Light Classrooms: Teaching Techniques That Accelerate Learning to more than 230 Mount Union students and faculty members on Saturday, September 24 on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

Washington Monthly has ranked the University of Mount Union among the top 100 liberal arts colleges and universities in the nation in its 2011 rankings.  Mount Union is ranked 98th among the 249 institutions that Washington Monthly included in the category.
