The University of Mount Union will host several events in honor and celebration of Black History Month. All of the following events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. For more information, contact the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at Mount Union at (330) 823-7288.

On Thursday, January 19 during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Dinner and Ceremony at the University of Mount Union, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership and Diversity Awards were presented to four people who exemplify the character and life of Dr. King.

Aria Plus Two will teach a masterclass on Monday, January 30 at 4 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus. The trio also will perform that evening at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.

The University of Mount Union is currently exploring a partnership with Jackson Local Schools in Jackson, Ohio and No. 1 High School of Liaocheng in Shandong Province, People’s Republic of China.

Kathy Reichenberger, lecturer of piano at the University of Mount Union, will present a faculty lecture recital on Wednesday, January 25 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall. Her performance, What’s the Difference, is a brief comparison of the harpsichord and the piano.

Barry Scott, an expert on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., presented the keynote address in honor of Dr. MLK Jr. Day on Thursday, January 12 at the University of Mount Union. Scott created his tribute to Dr. King to teach students about one of America’s most violent and inspiring times. During his address, he examined the life and works of Dr. King, a man who made an extraordinary impact on the civil rights movement and the world.

Dr. Patricia (Foley ’73) Matthews, dean of the Division of Professional Studies at the University of Mount Union, will present the Faculty Lecture on Wednesday, February 8 at 6 p.m. in the East Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. She will present Derivatives: Friend or Foe?

Theresa Davis, instructor of history at the University of Mount Union, will present A Gendered Stroll through History: The Evolution of Gender Roles as We See Them on Monday, January 23 at 7 p.m. in the East Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. This discussion is a part of the Confidence in U series, which is being organized by the Panhellenic Council and funded by a Kappa Delta Sorority grant.

Dr. Michelle Collins-Sibley, professor of English at the University of Mount Union, will present Tell Me What You Eat and I’ll Tell You Who You Are: Food Culture(s) and Global Community on Tuesday, January 24 at the LINC Luncheon. The luncheon will be held in the Hoover-Price Campus Center at noon, which is located on the University’s campus. 

The University of Mount Union is in need of volunteers for the National Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Monday, January 16. The planned service projects in the Alliance area, which are being organized by the Mount Union’s Ralph and Mary Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement, gives participants the opportunity to improve the lives of others while giving back to the community.

The University of Mount Union’s Panhellenic Council will offer a $tart $mart Workshop on Tuesday, January 17 at 5:30 p.m. in the East Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center. The workshop will kick off the Confidence in U series, which is being organized by the Panhellenic Council and funded by a Kappa Delta grant.

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of Mount Union is hosting a variety of events in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All events are free and open to the public, unless noted otherwise.

Dr. Jennifer Martin of Redford, Michigan has been named assistant professor of education at the University of Mount Union. She will be teaching courses in Mount Union’s Master of Arts in Educational Leadership graduate program, which will begin in the fall of 2012 and be offered primarily online.

Art by Diane Belfiglio entitled “An Artist’s Journey” will be on display in the Crandall Art Gallery on the University of Mount Union’s campus from January 9 – 30. An artists’ reception also will be held on Thursday, January 12 from 4 to 6 p.m.
