Melissa Gardner has been promoted to vice president for marketing at the University of Mount Union.

During an intimate conversation on Thursday night, author Khaled Hosseini discussed how his life led him to writing two best selling novels during the Schooler Lecture at the University of Mount Union. Hosseini is the author of two New York Times best sellers – The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

Monumental Ideas in Miniature Books II, an international traveling exhibition of object books, will be on display in the Crandall Art Gallery on the University of Mount Union’s campus from Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, December 9. The curator of the exhibit is Hui-Chu Ying, professor of art at the University of Akron’s Myers School of Art.

The University of Mount Union’s Department of Music will present a fall vocal showcase on Sunday, November 6 at 3 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall.

University of Mount Union students will spend their Wednesday evening writing letters to family and friends asking for donations to help St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital find new treatments for cancer, sickle cell disease and other catastrophic childhood diseases. The letter-writing event will be held from 4 – 10 p.m. in the Hoover Price Campus Center.

Nearly 100 students from area colleges and universities came together this past weekend to explore and discuss diversity issues at the fourth annual Not Another Statistic Conference on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

On Tuesday, October 25, the University of Mount Union held its annual student debate. The topic was “Resolved: Further stimulus spending financed by moderate tax increases is the best approach to reviving the economy and creating new jobs.”

Dr. Jennifer Hall, chair of the Department of Foreign Languages and cultures, faculty director of the Center for Global Education and associate professor of foreign languages and cultures at the University of Mount Union, presented Does France Really Matter? on Tuesday, October 25 at the LINC Luncheon. 

A forum featuring Alliance’s mayoral candidates will be held Wednesday, November 2 at 7 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

Five faculty members from the University of Mount Union are recipients of the Excellence in Education Award sponsored by Ohio Magazine. Dr. Beth Canfield-Simbro, Dr. Jamie Capuzza, Professor Sandra Ekstrand, Dr. Ronald Mendel Dr. Peter Schneller, and will be formally recognized for their achievements and dedication to teaching in Ohio Magazine’s special section “Excellence in Education” in the magazine’s December issue. All five faculty members also have been the recipients of Mount Union’s Great Teacher Award.

Dr. Cynthia Taggart, professor of music education and area chair of music at the Michigan State University (MSU) College of Music, will present the Wolf Lecture on Thursday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus.

The University of Mount Union will participate in the EPA Game Day Challenge during its last home football game on Saturday, November 5 against Baldwin-Wallace College at Mount Union Stadium, which is set to kick off at 1:30 p.m. The challenge is a friendly competition to encourage colleges and universities to focus on reducing waste, recycling and composting as much waste as possible.

Author Khaled Hosseini will be featured at the Schooler Lecture at the University of Mount Union on Thursday, October 27 at 8 p.m. in the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex (The MAAC). The lecture will be in the format of a moderated discussion led by Dr. Doug Hendel, professor of theatre at Mount Union. Hosseini, a native of Afghanistan, is the author of two New York Times best sellers – The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns.

During its annual fall meeting, the University of Mount Union Board of Trustees unanimously approved moving forward with preliminary design for two new potential construction projects – a health and medical sciences facility and a renovation and addition to the current arts complex.

A University of Mount Union fraternity and sorority are teaming up this month to scare away childhood cancer. Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) and Delta Sigma Tau (DST) will hold a “Haunted House on the Hill” on Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30 from 6-9 p.m. at the ATO House on Mount Union’s campus.

A faculty recital featuring Robin Tryon and Brent Schloneger will be held Friday, October 28 at 8 p.m. in Presser Recital Hall on the University of Mount Union’s campus.
