April 20, 2010
Mount Union College has named Canton resident Dr. Jamie Capuzza, professor of communication, as the 2010 Great Teacher. The award was presented Tuesday, April 20 at Mount Union's annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.
Capuzza, a 1985 graduate of Mount Union, earned a bachelor of arts in English and communication. She also earned master of arts and doctoral degrees in rhetorical theory and criticism from The Ohio State University.
A member of the Mount Union faculty since 1992, she is a dedicated and active professor, both on campus and off. She has served as director of both the Gender Studies and Honors programs. Capuzza is a member of the National Communication Association and the Association of Women in Communication, Inc. She has been actively teaching abroad as well, having taught in India and Thailand.
“Dr. Capuzza is an inspiration to all,” said one student nominator. “Not only does she inspire her students with her strength and charisma, but she also pushes students to see the strengths within themselves.”
“She is not only an effective and challenging professor, but she is the epitome of what I want to be like ‘when I grow up,’” said another.
“Dr. Capuzza fights for equality of women and minorities and encourages students to do the same,” said another student nominating Capuzza. “I know that my own personal growth can be directly attributed to her excellence in teaching and leading.”
“She has taught me to be proud of my femininity and be brave in my voice,” said another. “I owe her everything.”
“Dr. Capuzza inspired me to be a better person, inside and outside of the classroom,” said another student of hers. “She always takes the time to listen to her students and she always gives extremely useful advice.”
The Great Teacher Award, initiated in 1962, is sponsored by the Alumni Association and recognizes excellence in teaching – the foundation upon which the reputation of Mount Union has been built.
Capuzza was chosen as this year’s Great Teacher by a selection committee consisting of the officers of the senior class, the two past recipients of the Great Teacher Award, the president and immediate past president of the Alumni Association and the president of the National Cabinet of Mount Union Women.
