Carl D. Orwick Fraternal Values Award Presented
April 12, 2012
ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Carl D. Orwick Fraternal Values Award was presented to Martha “Nickie” (Nicholson ’45) Orwick and Andi Kelley during the University of Mount Union’s annual Greek Awards on Sunday, April 1.
Named for alumnus Carl D. Orwick ’42, who was a member of Alpha Tau Omega, this award is presented to one person in the Mount Union community for exceptional and outstanding demonstration of the principles and ideals of interfraternal spirit.
Orwick was a life-long member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He and his wife, Martha (“Nickie” or “Grandma”), represent the meaning of fraternity community through their constant contributions to both the fraternity and sorority as well as greater University community. Orwick served as the chapter advisor for Alpha Nu for more than 30 years and was a permanent fixture at the house at 205 W. College Ave. He retired in 2010 as the chapter’s advisor but remained actively involved, attending many events and still meeting all the new members as they joined the chapter.
Nominees for the award may be undergraduate members, administrators, advisors or a friend of the Mount Union fraternity/sorority community. Their dedication must be noteworthy and observable by all chapters on campus.
Nickie was recently deemed as an ATO Sweetheart. The brothers of ATO led her into the lounge at the house, where she was presented with flowers and an ATO pendant. Before presenting her with those gifts, members sang “Sweetheart of ATO.”
Kelley, graduate assistant in the Office of Student and Involvement and Leadership and resident director at Mount Union, is an active alumna member of her chapter at the College of Wooster. She will graduate in May with a Master of Education degree from Kent State University.
