Teaching Area(s): Engineering

On Mount Union’s campus, the engineering faculty and I are collaborating to create a civil and mechanical engineering curricula geared for the future that addresses industrial needs. Our engineering curricula emphasizes two main things that industry wants: hands-on education and the ability to communicate effectively.

Civil Engineering Career Prospects
According to the Bureau for Labor Statistics (BLS), employment in the field of civil engineering is projected to grow 20% over the course of the next decade, faster than the average for all occupations. So, more civil engineers will be needed to do all the things that civil engineers do – design and build things for our nation’s growing population. Mount Union’s program in civil engineering is focused on preparing students to meet this demand so that graduates can lead efforts to rebuild the bridges, repair the roads and upgrade the levees and dams of our country’s aging infrastructure.

The engineering faculty at the University of Mount Union consider hands-on experience to be a top priority, and they are focused on preparing you professionally and personally for this challenging field. Graduates will be prepared to hit the ground running after graduation, whether seeking a professional position or graduate studies and eventually sitting for the Professional Engineer Exam if they choose to pursue this certification.

You may wonder, as a civil engineer, what you will spend your days doing. The answer is broad. You may work on planning, designing, constructing or maintaining a number of structures including roads, bridges, airports, tunnels, dams, water and sewage systems. You may work for local, state or federal government agencies or in private practice.

Civil Engineering Career Salaries
Starting salaries for civil engineering graduates average around $50,000. These salaries could be higher if students interned or participated in co-op experiences. In general, engineering salaries rise at a healthy pace with experience and possessing sought-after skill sets.
