According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in civil engineering are projected to increase at a quicker pace than the average for other occupations throughout the next decade. So, more civil engineers will be needed to do all the things that civil engineers do – design and build things for our nation’s growing population.
One of the most mature disciplines of the field, civil engineering features a number of specialties including:
• Structural engineering
• Water-related engineering
• Environmental engineering
• Architectural engineering
• Transportation engineering
• Geo-technical engineering
You may wonder, as a civil engineer, what you will spend your days doing. The answer is broad. You may monitor, guide, devise and design a number of structures including roads, girders, bridges, airports, tunnels, dams and water and sewage systems. You may work for local, state or federal government agencies or in private practice, focusing on architecture or construction. The opportunities are endless, and the rewards priceless.
