1940s 

Violet Bica-Ross ’44 has been highlighted in The Ohio School Psychologist Spring/Summer 2016 issue honoring her recent Centennial Alumni Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a former student who graduated from a program within the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Kent State University. The award recognizes an individual who not only has made significant contributions within a professional guild, but also has marshaled new efforts to create change that promotes new methods of practice that go on in perpetuity. The article also recognizes Violet’s assistance in the development of the National Association of School Psychologists, of which she is a charter member. In addition, Violet has been inducted as a lifetime member of the Ohio Education Association and awarded the R.A. Horn Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Ohio School Psychologists Association.

Marie (Dorff ’56) and Alfred Bruey celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jackson, Michigan on July 31, 2016.

1960s 

Susan Pope’s ’67 chapbook of poems, Indifferent Light, was published in September 2016 by Finishing Line Press. This is her second chapbook of poems.

Elaine (Carlisle ’69) Semper received the 2016 Clyde V. Bartlett Distinguished Service Award from the Ohio Psychologist Association. This award recognizes an Ohio school psychologist for outstanding service or achievement in the profession. The award honors a school psychologist who has made outstanding contributions to the profession beyond duty, contributed significantly to the growth and development of the profession, and demonstrated outstanding services in the area of mental health. 

1970s 

Kim (Freshley ’74) Carlson retired from the Ohio Department of Education in 2012. Her husband, Dave, retired from Goodyear in 2015. They now reside in Punta Gorda, Florida.

Gary McCamon ’75 has retired from the McConnell Insurance Agency, and Nancy (Orwick ‘76) McCamon has retired as a second grade teacher from the Marlington Local School District. 

Sigma Nus Meet with Former Beta Iota Cook

Scott Berkeley ’80, Phil Francis ’80, Brian McCormick ’80, Kevin Edwards ’79, and Jeff Schulz ’79 met with Marilyn Middleton recently. Marilyn was the cook at Beta Iota for 26 years (1966-1992). She was a friend, confidant, and mother while these alumni were students at Mount Union. She celebrated her 86th birthday on June 26. She still lives in Alliance and enjoys playing cards, volunteering at the hospital, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Marilyn brought memorabilia from her Sigma Nu days for the group to enjoy. 

1980s

Susan (Shafer ’83) Cobran is the featured author in the Amazon best-selling anthology The Call to Soar, which was released on October 17, 2016. Her chapter is titled “Loving and Accepting Me.” She was also a co-author in another Amazon best-selling anthology in 2015, Emerge: Real Stories of Courage and Truth, with her title “Finding My Way.”

John Richard ’83 is the associate executive director of the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administration in Columbus, Ohio. This organization provides consulting, professional development, and networking opportunities for school administrators. John was previously the associate superintendent for the Ohio Department of Education following a career as a school district superintendent. He resides in the Columbus, Ohio area.

2000s

Rebecca (Brown ’02) Algeri is a research administrator at the Cleveland Clinic. She and her husband, Matthew, announce the birth of a son, Luke Charles, on July 20, 2016, who joins sister Morgan, 5.

Chad ’00 and Shelby Baddeley announce the birth of a son, Declan James, who joins sisters Eden Grace, 10, and Adah Faith, 9. 

Mike ’06 and Rachael (Bailey ’08) Gibbons announce the birth of a daughter, Molly, on April 21, 2016, who joins siblings Lainey, 4, and Cael, 2.  

Ana Harden, LISW-S ’02 is a clinical social worker at Veterans Health Administration in Cleveland, Ohio. 

John ’07 and Sarah Highman announce the birth of a daughter, Abigail Ann, on June 28, 2016, who joins brother Alex. The family resides in Canton, Ohio.

Anne (Walters ’03) and Richard Holiday announce the birth of a daughter, Emily Joanne, on July 5, 2016. They currently reside in Washington, DC. 

Kate (Fortney ’09) and Chris Horne announce the birth of a son, Hudson Robert, on October 5, 2016.  

Amanda (Channels ’02) and Chip  ’01 Leckonby announce the birth of a son, Aiden Joshua, on April 21, 2016.

Dr. Katrina (Hermetet ’08) Lindsay is currently completing a pediatric psychology fellowship at Akron Children’s Hospital. Upon completion of this training year, she will join the medical faculty of Akron Children’s Hospital as the director of the School Success Clinic and the Tic and Tourette Program in addition to teaching at NEOMED.  

Clay Long ’08 and Nicole Marinucci were married on August 6, 2016.

Daniel ’08 and Christine Luketic announce the birth of a daughter, Sage, on May 6, 2016.

Lindsey (Sassa ’06) and Andrew ’07 Mangus announce the birth of a son, Jaxon, who joins brother Ryan, 3. 

Scott ’08 and Jennifer Mercer announce the birth of a daughter, Eloise Ann, on July 13, 2016.

Michael Rogers ’08 earned J.D. and LL.M. in taxation degrees and will soon take the CPA exam.  

Sarah (Russ ’03) and Matt Sarka announce the birth of a son, Chase Matthew, on March 11, 2016. Sarah is a laboratory coordinator at Twinsburg Cleveland Clinic Family Health and Surgery Center. 

Rori Schneller ’06 and Lindell King announce the birth of a son, Lennon James, on July 20, 2016.

Stephany Sholtis ’07 is the technology coordinator for Hudson City Schools. She earned an education specialist degree in eLearning from Northcentral University. 

Elissa (Good ’01) Smith earned a Ph.D. in leadership and policy from Niagara University in May 2016.

Sara (Powell ’06) and Dan ’06 Sears announce the birth of a son, Matthew James, on January 7, 2016. He joins sister Isabella, 4. 

2010s

Brandon Alexander ’10 is the recipient of the Virginia American Water Works Association’s & Virginia Water Environment Association’s 2016 Laboratory Analyst Excellence Award.  

Christopher Bondra ’10 and Alexa Farmerie ’13 were married on July 1, 2016. Members of the wedding party included Kylee (Kolesar ’13) Mathie, Carolyn Bondra ’12, Hilary Carle ’14, and Nick Walker ’11.

Helen Daher ’11 and Cody Hayes were married on May 21, 2016. Other alumni in attendance included Callie Zurz ’09 and Ashley King ’13.

Erin Drotleff ’11 has been accepted into Case Western Reserve’s MSN-Healthcare program. 

Gina (Rotuna ’10) and Joe Gallina announce the birth of a daughter, Natalie Rae, on May 8, 2016, who joins sister Emily, 2. 

Megan (Winters ’11) and Ryan ’11 Gearhart announce the birth of a daughter, Giavonna Rose, on June 23, 2016. They currently reside in Wellsville, Ohio.  

Neal Greenho ’14 earned a master’s degree in sport and fitness management from Troy University in May 2016.

Brant Miller ’14 and Jana Sleutz ’15 were married on August 22, 2016. The couple resides in Alliance, Ohio. They are both students in Mount Union’s Physician Assistant Studies Program, and upon completing his PANCE Board Exam, Brant will work at AIMM in Alliance, Ohio. 

Lauren Schneid ’12 and Justin Matus were married on August 27, 2016. She is currently a human resource generalist at First Federal Lakewood. 

Dan Schrader ’10 and Amber Rinaldi ’10 were married on June 18, 2016. Their wedding party included Gina (Rotuna ’10) Gallina, Melissa Shook ’10, and Stacy Mann ’11

Annie (Cotton ’13) and Brian Schultz were married on July 2, 2016. Other alumni present included parents of the bride, Timothy ’77 and Margaret (Bonistalli ’76) Cotton, David Cotton ’09, Elizabeth Juran ’13, Benjamin Russell ’11, and many others. 

Abigail Weingart ’11 received a doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) degree from Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in May 2016.She also received the Primary Care Scholarship at commencement.

Mount Union Alumni Take Center Stage

Antonietta “Toni” Collins ’07 provided a guest voice for the Disney animated series Elena of Avalor for its Diá de los Muertos episode in October. Collins is already a member of the Walt Disney family of networks, as she frequently anchors ESPN’s flagship show SportsCenter weekdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Carrie Coon ’03 has been cast as the female lead, Gloria Burgle, in the third season of FX’s critically-acclaimed TV series, “Fargo.” Coon is also known for her work with HBO’s “The Leftovers” in which she plays Nora Durst. She was nominated for the 2015 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for this role. She also appeared on the silver screen in the major motion picture “Gone Girl.” 

Washington Redskins wide receiver Pierre Garçon ’08 caught his 500th reception in the NFL against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, October 2 in Washington, DC. Garçon is one of only 14 active and one of 131 all-time NFL players to achieve this milestone per Pro Football Reference. He has also been nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, which recognizes an NFL player for his excellence on and off the field.

Nancy Hill ’79, CEO of the American Association of Advertising Agencies (4A’s), was recognized by the 3 Percent Conference, which named an award in her honor. Founded by Kat Gordon, the 3 Percent Conference helps women get into more creative leadership roles. The award was named after Hill as a result of her work at the 4A’s and her dedication to helping women move forward in their careers as a means of creating a more diverse and humanistic workforce. In 2017, Hill will be stepping down from her current role with the 4A’s after nine years. During her tenure in this role, she modernized the 4A’s operations, providing guidance to the agency community on transformative issues and passionately advocating for gender and diversity initiatives throughout the industry. Following her departure, she will focus on consulting and will spend time in Ecuador volunteering and teaching.

Eduardo Valdes ’83 celebrated his 600th musical performance for the New York Metropolitan Opera on November 26. Valdes’ performance was in the critically acclaimed Aida, a four-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi that takes place in Egypt. Valdes had already achieved a lifetime goal of becoming a musician and performing for one of the most renowned opera houses in the world.

Virgil Artino ’50 of Alliance, Ohio passed away on October 6, 2016. Artino was a teacher in the Alliance public school system for 34 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and an M Club Hall of Fame inductee as the first alumnus to earn four varsity letters in football.

Hal Cummings Oberholzer ’50 of Fort Wayne, Indiana passed away on August 22, 2016. A former president of the Mount Union chapter of Sigma Nu, Hal was the brother of Gretchen (Oberholzer ’59) Patterson and the late Fred Oberholzer ’49. His son Hal “Butch” Oberholzer ’75 is a Mount alumnus as well.

Rev. Robert Stine ’59 passed away on March 16, 2016. He was an ordained minister of the United Methodist Church and served nine large churches in Ohio, Illinois, Delaware, Colorado, and Indiana.

Eleanor (Meeker ’53) Taylor of New London, New Hampshire passed away on October 16, 2016. She performed in off-Broadway and New Jersey theaters. She was a 30+ year member of the National Society of Arts and Letters (NSAL), serving as a past New Jersey Chapter president and on the National Board.

W. Richard Snyder ’64 of Minerva, Ohio passed away on August 12, 2016. He taught English at Carrollton High School and worked for Carrollton Graphics. He was a member of the Minerva First Christian Church where he had been an elder, a member of the choir, and a Sunday school teacher.  

John Sponseller ’61 of Canton, Ohio passed away on September 18, 2016. John spent his career as a practicing attorney in his family’s law firm of Sponseller and Rothermel and as owner of the Midland Title Agency in Canton, Ohio. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving as a meteorologist in the Canal Zone in Panama.  

Margaret (Yesso ’65) Watson of Fremont, California passed away on June 26, 2016. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Union and a master’s in library science from the University of Denver.

Deborah “Debbie” Jane Barrick of Canton, Ohio passed away on July 1, 2016. 

David Calhoun of Jacksonville Beach, Florida passed away on July 25, 2016.  

James Charles Carter of Tucker, Georgia passed away on July 3, 2016.  

Larry Houze of Minerva, Ohio passed away on June 30, 2016. He was an attendee in 1961. 

David Wright of Tuscon, Arizona passed away on July 10, 2016. He was a former chemistry professor at Mount Union. 

Retired Faculty and Staff Members Pass Away

Dr. Chester Bartram of Massillon, Ohio passed away on October 17, 2015. He earned Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Marshall University and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from The Ohio State University. A veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served overseas in England, North Africa, and Italy. 

He was a teacher, principal, and supervisor for Mason County Schools in West Virginia before beginning a 28-year career as a professor and chair of the Department of Education at Mount Union, from which he retired in 1983. During his tenure at Mount Union, he led efforts to revise the teacher education program, raising academic requirements of admission and establishing a committee to screen applicants contemplating a teaching career.  

Following his retirement, he researched, wrote, and published three genealogy books and two autobiographies andalso co-authored, with his niece Nell Dean Ross, Journey Into Yesterday: Along the Bartram Trail. 

Donald Greek of Louisville, Ohio passed away on June 18, 2016. Don was a member of the Physical Plant staff at Mount Union for 26 years.  

Sabra “Sam” Heckman of Alliance, Ohio passed away on August 10, 2016 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Sabra retired from Mount Union after 28 years of service as the Physical Plant secretary.  

Dr. Mary Ellen Nurmi of State College, Pennsylvania passed away August 1, 2016. She attended Western Reserve University and the College of Wooster, and upon graduation, she enlisted in the American Red Cross and served three years overseas in India during World War II. She then became the first woman to receive a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the English Department at Kent State University. 

Mary Ellen pursued a 30-year career as a professor in the Department of English at Mount Union, from which she retired in 1984. During her tenure, she was also involved with the institution’s Honors Program and Non-Traditional Studies Program. She became the first woman to receive the Great Teacher Award. She also traveled extensively, including teaching assignments abroad.
