Class of 1956 Endows Scholarship as Part of 50th Reunion Celebration
April 01, 2010
This year's Mount Union College Golden Anniversary class commemorated its fiftieth reunion by endowing a scholarship to assist needy and worthy students.
First Row (L-R): Janet McLean '56, Shirley (Barrick) Weimer '56 and Sally (Cooper '56) Otto. Second Row: Eric Otto '56, Jane (Mackey) Barrett '56 and Dick Koons '56
In January, when a committee of class members met to plan for their 50-year celebration, it was decided that they would ask the class to collectively raise $20,000 to fund a scholarship that would be given each year to a deserving Mount Union student in the name of the Class of 1956.
This amount would be enough to fund an annual scholarship of $1,000. The award will be based on two factors - need and a minimum GPA of 3.0.
'So far, 43 class members have given and pledged a total of $20,270, so we have met our goal,' said Shirley (Barrick) Weimer, who led the effort. 'However, the fund is open-ended and may be added to at any time.
'The committee thanks all of the donors for their generosity to our alma mater.'
An additional $10,000 has been pledged to be given from the estate of a class member in the future. At that time, the scholarship amount would be increased to $1,500 per year.
The Class of 1956 Scholarship Committee included Jayne (Bachtel) Amon, Jane (Mackey) Barrett, Louis Beltrami, Dick Cannon, Tom Crawley, Don Eshler, Nell (Leitch) Eshler, Ken Greenwalt, Joan (Sheridan) Hinton, Connie (Taylor) Jenkins, Dick Koons, Janet McLean, Al Mayforth, John Morey, Jim Otto, Sally (Cooper) Otto, Ed Perkinson, Joanne Pigott, Blanche (Greaves) Recchi, Carole (Kenmuir) Van Abel, John Van Abel, Carol (Gorby) Weber, Shirley (Barrick) Weimer and Mary Lou (Hukill) Wells.
