CLP Returns in April with Four Guest Speakers

March 27, 2018

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Continued Learning Program (CLP) will begin its final installment for the 2017-18 Academic Year at the University of Mount Union this April.

A program of the Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement, CLP serves as an opportunity for community members to continue learning by bringing in experts from various areas of study. Four presentations will take place in April. All presentations will be held in the Newbold Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center at 10 a.m. each Tuesday.

The program kicks off on Tuesday, April 3 and will feature Pat Gates ’71, former president of Kiwanis, with her presentation titled “Oh, the Places You will Go!”.

Gates grew up on a 140-acre farm near Malabar Farm. After receiving her bachelor's degree in mathematics, she returned home and taught for a year at Ontario Junior High School before marrying and returning to the area. She spent her teaching career at numerous schools where she served in various capacities. In her time at Marlington High School, she served as the yearbook advisor for 15 years and the athletic director for three years.

Today, Gates stays active in the Alliance community. She is currently the volunteer coordinator for Alliance Community Pantry, the president of the Auxiliary for the VFW, a member of the board for Habitat for Humanity and delivers Meals on Wheels.

The remaining presentations will take place each Tuesday of the month.

April 10 will feature Kevin Kern, associate professor and chair of the Department of Theatre at Mount Union, will present “Shakespeare at the Castle”.

“Alliance Rubber Clean-Up and Emergency Preparedness” will be presented by Alliance Fire Chief Jason Hunt on April 17.

Danni Smith from H&R Block will wrap up April’s series with her presentation titled “The New Tax Law and You” on April 24.
