My favorite class thus far has been Epidemiology, which is the study of disease outbreak and prevention. I liked this class because it is the cornerstone of public health. Plus, it is amazing how many little details actually go into public health programs that keep us safe and healthy on daily basis.

MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
All walks of life
I like how diversified the students are at Mount Union. Students come from everywhere … rural and urban areas, different states and countries and large and small high schools. Plus, thanks to the many different personalities, I have made friends that will last a lifetime.
Love for athletics
Besides the beautiful campus and modern look, I love how Mount Union really expresses a love for athletics. Athletics are a large part of a student’s experience, and I was eager to attend a university that actively shows how hard work and commitment can pay off. In addition, Mount Union has school pride like no other college or university. There’s purple pride everywhere. Students that attend Mount Union feel such a strong connection to the school that is lasts for more than four years … it lasts a lifetime.
Top of the line
If I had to pick one place on campus to take someone who was visiting, I would take him or her to the Peterson Field House because it is top of the line in regard to indoor college tracks. Of course I enjoy it for track purposes, but numerous students love the field house because it is used for various intramural sports, shooting hoops and playing tennis.
Helping people
I chose to major in public health because I knew I wanted to help vast amounts of people every day.
Studying disease
My favorite class thus far has been Epidemiology, which is the study of disease outbreak and prevention. I liked this class because it is the cornerstone of public health. Plus, it is amazing how many little details actually go into public health programs that keep us safe and healthy on daily basis.
Contagious passion
Without a doubt, my favorite professor is Dr. Beth Canfield-Simbro, associate professor of human performance and sport business. Her passion is contagious and is what really got me hooked on public health. In addition, she has given me great advice on what to do regarding summer internships and graduate school plans. Dr. Canfield-Simbro has taught me that with an open mind, a drive for helping the public and an understanding of diversity, you will go far with a career in public health.
Ultimate career goal
My ultimate career would be a program evaluator for the Cleveland Department of Public Health, improving underprivileged women’s programs. Program evaluators decide which programs are working, how to improve existing programs and ultimately, if peoples’ lives are being improved and saved. A career that makes other peoples’ lives healthier and happier is a career that is definitely worthwhile.
