David Giffels to Present Eckler Lecture at Mount Union on January 27

Author and journalist David Giffels, will present the Eckler Lecture at Mount Union College on Wednesday, January 27 at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Recital HaDavid Giffelsll. 

Giffels, a longtime Akron Beacon Journal columnist, is a creative writing professor at the University of Akron. He is the author of All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-down House. This memoir about his coming of age as a father in a ramshackle mansion, is a 2009 winner of the Ohioana Book Award. He is also the co-author of Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! and Wheels of Fortune: The Story of Rubber in Akron.

In an 18-year journalism career, he has received dozens of awards, including the 2009 national Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and a 2008 general excellence award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. In 2009, he was honored as Best News Writer in Ohio by the Associated Press and has been nominated six times for the Pulitzer Prize. His writing has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Redbook, This Old House Magazine and many other publications.

Giffels most recent book will be available for purchase and a book signing and reception will be held in the lobby following the lecture.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Presser Recital Hall is located in Cope Music Hall on the corner of Union Avenue and Simpson Street on the Mount Union campus. 

The Eckler Lecture in Literature and Drama was established in 1981 through an endowment given by Mr. John A. and Mrs. Dorothy (Nelson '29) Cummins in appreciation of the many years of service to the community and Mount Union College by the Ecklers. Dr. Eric A. and Mrs. Mary Eckler were long-time faculty members in the Department of Education at Mount Union.
