Day of Service Events to be Held at Mount Union College

May 26, 2010

Mount Union College will present A Day of Service event sponsored by the Center for Public Service and Office of Service-Learning and Community Service on Friday, February 9 and Saturday, February 10.

Service-learning expert Nadinne Cruz will spend Friday, February 9 meeting with students and faculty.

Also on Friday, Cruz will also offer a keynote address in the East Room of the Hoover-Price Campus Center at 4 p.m. Entitled "The Urgent Need for Service-Learning As Civic Art: Reflections on 20 Years of Practice and Critique of a Pedagogy," Cruz's address will offer reflections on her over twenty years of experiences with a pedagogy of engagement that she originally critiqued publicly, then came to embrace as a teacher-practitioner, advocate, leader and author.

Cruz has been a practitioner, leader, speaker and author on the need for pedagogies of engagement in higher education. She is the former Director of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford, where she developed the Public Service Scholars Program, and has taught service-learning courses for the Program in Urban Studies.

As executive director of the Higher Education Consortium for Urban Affairs (HECUA), Cruz led 18 colleges and universities in the upper midwest to develop community-based learning programs in locations such as Minneapolis, Latin America, Scandinavia and other parts of the world.

Now an independent consultant, Cruz works with a variety of colleges and universities, including the higher education organizations of California Campus Compact, National Campus Compact, and the California State University system, while continuing with active mentorship of former students and emerging educators and leaders in the field.

Events on Saturday, February 10 will be open to the public starting at 9 a.m. There will be five tracks throughout the day with topics varying from public service and service-learning internships, public service projects and teaching diversity through service. All tracks will include both professional and student presenters such as Jennifer Haran, former AmeriCorps VISTA, Katie Jones, Legislative Aide to State Senator John Boccieri and Dr. Jane Rosser of Bowling Green University.

All attendees will receive continental breakfast, lunch in the new Mount Union dining hall and an event t-shirt. Attendees are welcome to bring displays and any handouts about their own public service or service-learning programs and upcoming events. Tables for display and distribution will be available.
