Department of Theatre to Present Play Nov. 15-18

October 29, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union Department of Theatre will present A Servant of Two Masters on November 15-18 in the Rodman Playhouse on Mount Union’s campus.

Servant of Two Masters, written by Carlo Goldoni and translated and adapted by Tom Cone,is written as a Commedia del’Arte, a fast-paced, loosely structured style of comedic theatre that features over the top physical comedy. It tells the story of Truffaldino (a Harlequin clown) and his quest to serve as a “gentleman” to two masters. Along the way, he runs into a doctor spouting phony Latin, a miserly father more concerned with money than his daughter’s happiness and a giant bowl of spaghetti. Although this story is set in the 17th century, Mount Union’s production will include dashes of contemporary life, including high-top sneakers, a live band and cell phones. The use of Commedia masks provide exaggerated expressions and force the performers to maintain a strong physical presence, speaking as much with their bodies as their voices.

Under the direction of Assistant Professor of Theatre Kevin Kern, the cast and crew includes:

  • Anthony Heider, a sophomore public relations major of Wakeman, OH playing the role of Pantalone;
  • Sarah Hohenadel, a freshman biology major of Uniontown, OH as Clarice;
  • Conor Smolinsky, a freshman neuroscience major of Malvern, OH as Lombardi;
  • Bryan Sfara, a sophomore computer science major of Canfield, OH as Silvio;
  • Jacob Ward, a sophomore art major of Kensington, OH as Truffaldino;
  • Natalie Ricciutti, a freshman psychology major of Canfield, OH as Smeraldina;
  • Jenna Miller, a freshman psychology major of Avon Lake, OH as Beatrice;
  • Corey Merriman, a freshman communication major of Dalton, OH as Florindo;
  • Nicole Alponat, a junior public relations major of Mentor, OH as Brighella;
  • Brandon German, a sophomore computer science and criminal justice major of Cumberland, OH as Vittorio;
  • Alex Waitinas, a freshman music education major of Orwell, OH as Nicki;
  • Katie Hill, a senior early childhood education major of Brook Park, OH as head stage manager;
  • Jeff Looker, a junior communication major of Stow, OH as assistant stage manager;
  • Kristina Zoretich, a sophomore theatre major of Ashtabula, OH as assistant stage manager; and
  • Band members include Bradley Fiorucci, a freshman of Twinsburg, OH and Quinton Cutler, a freshman of Uniontown, OH.

Costume design for the play is by Deb Lotsof, professor of theatre, and can be described as “inspired silliness” with plenty of stage gags. The set, designed by Rudy Roggenkamp, associate professor of theatre, is abstract with plenty of playing areas for the physical comedy and features an embedded tribute to Mount Union.

Show times are 8 p.m. November 15-17 and 2 p.m. November 18.

The Rodman Playhouse is located on the corner of Simpson Street and Union Avenue on Mount Union’s campus. Tickets are $8 for general admission and $7 for senior citizens.
