I chose to major in philosophy because it tackles the big questions in life. In philosophy, you are never expected to accept anything as true just because somebody says so. It is up to the individual to judge what is true by reason rather than deferring to an authority figure for the answer.
Fleet and Grounds
The Fleet Department is responsible for servicing a current fleet of 45 university vehicles including cars, vans and service trucks. They maintain and repair all tractors, mowers, and miscellaneous motorized equipment. They are also responsible for the daily trash pickup in all campus residence halls, houses and academic buildings.
The Grounds Department is responsible for maintaining all lawn, tree, shrub and flower bed areas. During the winter, they work together with the fleet and maintenance departments to handle snow and ice removal from parking lots and sidewalks.
The Security Department is responsible for 24 hour patrol of all campus buildings and grounds. Patrol duties include confronting suspicious activities, contacting staff for after hours emergency maintenance work and calling in staff for snow and ice removal. They handle daily locking and unlocking of academic and administrative buildings. The department is also responsible for enforcement of campus parking policies.

The Housekeeping Department is responsible for daily cleaning of all campus buildings. They also have a crew to ensure that all floors are cleaned and properly maintained.
The Maintenance Department is responsible for keeping the buildings on campus in working order. They maintain all heating, cooling, plumbing and electrical equipment on campus. The carpenters are responsible for most of the remodeling, custom built items, and furniture moving. They are also responsible for issuing all keys, and picking up and delivery mail and UPS packages. The Timken building is staffed with a full time maintenance employee to meet the special needs of the building.
The administrative functions of Physical Plant are performed by a director and two secretaries. The director is responsible for all new constuction on campus and project management. The maintenance, fleet and grounds, housekeeping, and security departments report to the Director of Physical Plant.
The secretaries are responsible for processing work orders, vehicle registration and parking violations from the campus community. Scheduling university vehicles for departmental functions, overseeing staff time reports and all general office duties also make up their daily responsiblities. They assist as needed with any of the special projects throughout the campus.
