Dewald Dinner Highlights Academic Excellence

DravesThe 32nd annual Dewald Honors Dinner and Program was held on Tuesday, September 18 to recognize high academic achievement among University of Mount Union students during the 2011-2012 Academic Year.
Students invited to the event included those named to the Dean’s List for the 2011-2012 Academic Year, as well as students who achieved other honors and incoming freshman who earned high scholastic success in high school.
During the event, last year’s top freshman, sophomore and senior class scholars were recognized. Dr. Melissa Muller, chair of the Academic Policies Committee, presented the class leader prizes.
The A.P. Rickard and Alice W. and Stanley T. Evans Freshman Prize was awarded to Eva Laino, a biochemistry major from Canfield, OH. Laino is a member of the Honors Program, Alpha Phi Omega and Delta Sigma Tau. The Freshman Prize is given annually to the member of the freshman class who has the highest grade point average at the close of the academic year.
The Ralph K. and Elizabeth B. Ramsayer Sophomore Prize was given to Kelly Slutz, a double major in Spanish and sociology from Orrville, OH. On campus, she is a member of numerous organizations including Kappa Phi, Religious Life Council, Campus Church, Sociology Club, Geology Club, Alpha Mu Gamma and Foreign Language Club. This prize was established to honor the most outstanding member of the sophomore class.
The final prize announced was the McMaster/Drushal Junior Prize, which was awarded to Strongsville, OH native Bevin Blake. With a double major in biology and psychology, Blake is a member of the Blue Key honors society, Alpha Phi Omega, Alpha Mu Gamma, Beta Beta Beta, Psi Chi and the women’s track and field team, as well as a Writing Center tutor. The McMaster/Drushal Junior Prize honors the member of the junior class who is highest in scholarship and deportment for that year.
One student from the Honors Program also spoke at the event. Kyle Dreger, a junior computer science major, presented “Intern to Learn,” which focused on his internship at The Timken Company.
The Dewald Honors Dinner was made possible by the late Dr. Donald and Eleanore (Iman ’38) Dewald of Mansfield, OH. The vision and dedication of these two individuals has allowed for the annual recognition of the academic achievement of Mount Union students.
