While taking Elementary Chinese, I had the opportunity to practice traditional Chinese calligraphy. This was my absolute favorite part of class because it shows that there is not only a difference in the way words are written (characters versus letters), but also a difference in the method of how the language is written. Calligraphy is a traditional part of Chinese history and culture, and being able to practice it myself made me respect that aspect of the Chinese culture even more. It is no easy feat to write using a calligraphy brush!

The Discover China Program
The Discover China Program, a unique one-year opportunity at the University of Mount Union slated for the 2012-13 Academic Year, will expose students to the language and culture of more than 1.3 billion people living in our increasingly inter-connected world.
Through this study China program, you will develop an understanding and appreciation of the Chinese language and culture and be better prepared to live and thrive in our global society. In fact, such knowledge is highly beneficial in a number of career fields, and is particularly useful in in the business world as well as international studies, public health, education, history and even criminal justice.
Discover China is a two-semester program culminating with an early-summer, faculty-led travel experience. Through this program, you will gain invaluable experience and knowledge through four distinct components – course study, residential immersion, China study abroad, and service-learning.
