Doug Hendel to Perform in 'Bus Stop'
February 18, 2014
Mount Union professor emeritus Doug Hendel will make his first appearance with Actors’ Summit this week, performing as Dr. Lyman in Bus Stop presented by Actor’s Summit. Hendel recently retired after 30-year teaching career. He has performed with Remy Bumppo Theatre, Chicago and Milwaukee Repertory Theatre.
Actors’ Summit, Akron’s professional theater, announces the opening of Bus Stop, the classic American comedy by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, William Inge.
The show will have a preview performance on February 20 with the official opening on Friday night, February 21. Bus Stop will have a 12 performance run, closing on March 9. Performances are given Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and take place at Greystone Hall in downtown Akron. The show is appropriate for all ages. A dessert reception will follow the opening night performance on Friday, February 21.
In a corner diner in a nameless town 25 miles west of Kansas City, MS, the occupants of a cross-country bus have been stranded. A blizzard has made the road impassible and the passengers, as well as the locals in the diner, are trapped until the road is cleared.
One of the occupants of the bus has been kidnapped by a young cowboy. He fell in love with her at a Kansas City dance hall and is determined to carry her back to his Montana ranch. The local sheriff steps in to protect her. The owner of the restaurant and her high school waitress are just as locked in by the weather as are the occupants of the bus.
To pass the time, they drink coffee, sing, perform Shakespeare, eat, fight and talk. Friendships are made, romances develop and when the road opens up everyone faces the day a little changed by the night’s experiences.
Tickets for Bus Stop are on sale now through the box office at 330-374-7568 and online at actorssummit.org. Preview tickets (February 20) are $20. Tickets for all other performances are $33 for adults, $28 for seniors over 65 and $10 for all full time students under 30.
The theater is located on the sixth floor of historic Greystone Hall in downtown Akron. The facility features barrier free access, free parking, and full bar service.
