DOWLING MENTOR PROGRAM HONORS STUDENTS

ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union Dowling Mentor Program honored students from both the College and Alliance City Schools at its end-of-the-year banquet Sunday evening.

Featured speaker, Andre Jackson, a 1981 graduate of Alliance High School, spoke on the importance of education and diversity. Earning a bachelor of arts degree in the field of Child and Family Services from Bowling Green, Jackson is currently employed at the Maumee Corrections Facility in Toledo. Expressing his gratitude towards Mr. Robert Dowling, his mentor, Jackson mentioned learning patience and perseverance directly from Dowling.

Director of the Dowling Mentor Program Lorie Miller, along with program founders Jack and Madge Peters, presented Alliance High School Seniors Melissa Champion, Jason Hawkins and Loressa Williamson with plaques honoring their participation in the program.

The Peters, along with former mentor Randy Clark recognized this year's Mount Union Student Mentors.

The following were recognized for three years of service:
- Michael Bourne, a junior from Alliance
- Elizabeth Davis, a senior from Chardon
- Damoon Dixon, a junior from Youngstown
- Robert Lenigar, a senior from Salem
- Jeremy Mackall, a senior from North Lima
- Susan Rose, a senior from Canton
- Jennifer Weingart, a senior from Salem

Recognized for two years of service:
- Amanda Crist, a senior from North Canton
- Pam Farnsworth, sophomore from Hartville
- Craig Fitzgerald, a junior from Alliance
- Teddy Florea, a sophomore from Romania
- Brian Kostura, a senior from North Royalton
- Melanie McMaster, a sophomore from Chardon
- Jessica Miller, a sophomore from Alliance
- Michael Mitchum, a freshman from Columbus
- Jeremy Mollenkopf, a senior from New Castle, PA

Special guests in attendance included Art Garnes, superintendent of Alliance City
Schools; Kim Knowles, Stanton Middle School counselor; Mount Union College trustee George Weimer and his wife Shirley and past mentor Randy Clark.

In addition to meeting on a regular basis for tutoring and social events, members of the program also perform community service projects. This year's projects included helping with the Rodman Library used book sale, wrapping gifts for the Salvation Army Wish Tree, cleaning the Alliance Neighborhood Center, visiting the Alterra Assisted Living Home, spring cleaning at Thompson Snodgrass Park and hosting a Harvest party for area children.
