Dr. Beth Canfield-Simbro Named 2011 Great Teacher

Dr. Beth Canfield-SimbroThe University of Mount Union has named Alliance resident Dr. Beth Canfield-Simbro, associate professor of human performance and sport business and co-director of the Honors Program, as the 2011 Great Teacher. The award was presented Tuesday, April 19 at Mount Union's annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.
 
Canfield-Simbro, a 1996 Wright State University graduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in biology. She then earned master’s and doctorate degrees in public health from The Ohio State University.
 
A member of the Mount Union faculty since 2004, she is a dedicated and active professor and her list of accomplishments, both on and off campus, is extensive. She has been instrumental in the success of the Honors Program, a member or past member of numerous campus committees and task forces and advisor to UMADD and the Scholastic Achievement Coalition. She was instrumental in the development of the public health major on campus and is an exceptional advocate for service-learning initiatives.
 
“She is easily the most affective and most enjoyable teacher that I have had in my entire academic experience,” said one student nominator. “I credit her for everything that I have been able to accomplish at Mount Union, and everything that I will accomplish in the future.”
 
“She has a very caring quality toward her students,” said another. “When her students need her for help with anything, she is there to help them.”
 
“Simply put, she is a model for how each of us should try to conduct our lives. She is a great person, great teacher and great mentor,” said another student nominating Canfield-Simbro. “She is an inspiration, and I hope to impact the life of just one student in my career the way she has impacted me.”
 
The Great Teacher Award, initiated in 1962, is sponsored by the Alumni Association and recognizes excellence in teaching – the foundation upon which the reputation of Mount Union has been built.
 
Canfield-Simbro was chosen as this year’s Great Teacher by a selection committee consisting of the officers of the senior class, the two past recipients of the Great Teacher Award, the president and immediate past president of the Alumni Association and the president of the National Cabinet of Mount Union Women.
