Dr. Bulent Atalay to Present Gallaher Lecture

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Scientist, artist and author Dr. Bulent Atalay will present the 2015 Gallaher Lecture at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15 in the Gallaher Theatre of the Giese Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Mount Union. A reception will follow the lecture.

Celebrating the 563rd Birthday of Leonardo da Vinci, Atalay will present “How Leonardo Invented the Future, but Did Not Influence It.” Atalay is a regular keynote speaker to gifted students at high schools, universities and youth centers around the world. With roots in Turkey and England, he now resides in the United States.

Described by NPR, the Washington Post and the National Geographic Society as a “21st Century Renaissance Man,” Atalay is a professor emeritus of physics at the University of Mary Washington, adjunct professor at the University of Virginia and a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton.

Atalay has presented his works in one-man exhibitions in London and Washington and his two books of lithographs – “Lands of Washington”and “Oxford and the English Countryside” –can be found in the permanent collections of Buckingham Palace, the Smithsonian and the White House.

Five years after its release by Smithsonian Books in April 2004, his best-selling book, “Math and the Mona Lisa,”has had numerous printings in English and has appeared in 13 languages.

Atalay’s advanced education includes Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees as well as postdoctoral studies, completed at Georgetown, Princeton, University of California-Berkley and Oxford University. He is the president of the Ataturk Society of America (ASA), a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Ataturk’s ideals of science and reason over dogma and superstition, and a secular state with full equality of genders.

About the Gallaher Lecture
The Dr. Charles S. Gallaher Science Lecture Series was established in 2013 with an estate gift from Dr. Charles S. Gallaher ’25. Gallaher was a Mount Union alumnus and distinguished member of the Board of Trustees from 1956 to 1994. The lecture supports the sciences and is to be presented in the Charles S. Gallaher Hall.
