University Faculty Spotlight:
Dr. Govind Shanadi

Title: Assistant Professor of Communication
Teaches: Integrated Media

Media
I really enjoy the energy of a college campus and the chance to interact with students. I teach media classes because I think the media have a big impact on shaping society.

Professional Accomplishments
To be honest, simply finishing my doctorate was a great feeling of accomplishment after so many years of schooling. But since then, I take pride in the accomplishments of our students. When they do well, I feel like we’ve done our job.

Teaching Style
I tend to lecture more in my lower level classes simply because there is a foundation of knowledge you need to master at that stage. In upper level classes, I try to do more discussion, group projects and other types of collaborative learning. Mount Union’s small classes make that latter type of learning possible.

Bringing Knowledge to the Classroom
I’ve taught in Spain and Costa Rica. I like to travel as a way of learning, and I try to bring back those experiences into my classroom. I think because of the internet and other forces of globalization, students need that sort of international competency.

Best Part of the Job
I like being able to help students discover their own talents/strengths and laying a foundation for a successful career.

Favorite Building
I like Kolenbrander-Harter Information Center (KHIC) because of where I come in to work is under all the flags. It’s a good way to start the day. I also like the huge window overlooking the Academic Mall. I often walk in front of it to get to my class.

Best of Both Worlds
Mount Union combines the best of a small college and large university. It’s small enough that no one feels like a number, but it’s big enough to offer a variety of majors and extra-curricular activities.

Preparing Students
Mount Union teaches students how to think, rather than a simple set of things to know. The latter will often become outdated, but if you know how to think, you will be a lifelong learner.

Research Interests
The art of movies, political communication, social media and privacy
