Dr. John Recchiuti Spotlighted by AHA

March 19, 2013

ALLIANCE, Ohio — University of Mount Union professor Dr. John Recchiuti of Alliance recently found himself “in the spotlight” as part of a faculty series awarded by the American Historical Association.

As the largest historical society in the United States, the organization wants to showcase its talented historians who represent every historical period and geographical area. Recchiuti, professor of history and director of the American Studies Program, attended Columbia University from 1985 to 1992 where he earned his Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

“I was delighted when the AHA contacted me, though I wasn’t surprised by the nomination,” said Recchiuti. “I’ve been active with the AHA and in the profession for many years. I served for a few years on an AHA national committee; traveling to Washington, D.C. for those meetings was both demanding and fun.”

Recchiuti served as the external evaluator for several of the U.S. Department of Education’s Teaching American History (TAH) million-dollar grants. He also conducted U.S. History and pedagogy summertime workshops for the national Council for History Education (NCHE).

Through his work, he was able to travel across the U.S. to talk to teachers and historians in California, Colorado, Tennessee, Louisiana, Florida, Michigan, Ohio, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, gaining insight about what is going on in history education throughout the country.

Even after all of his travels he finds Alliance, Ohio to be a great place to call home.

“Mount Union is a terrific place. We have great students, and a wonderful history department. Go Mount!”

Recchiuti has recently been selected by the Fulbright Commission for a Fulbright Specialist award to travel to Pakistan to teach faculty and graduate students in Islamabad elements in American culture, society and history.  Because of the turmoil in that country and the U.S. State Department’s travel advisories and concerns for safety there, however, Recchiuti is not sure he will be able to undertake the travel.
