Dr. MLK Jr. Day Events Planned

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Mount Union will host a variety of events in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All events are free and open to the public. The theme for this year's celebration is "50 Years Since the Passage of the Civil Rights Act: Where Are We Now?" 

Thursday, January 16
Candlelight Vigil
7 p.m., Campus Grounds, Hoover-Price Campus Center

The Rev. Marty Cashburless, Chaplain, will lead students and community members around campus sharing thoughts and inspirational words about Martin Luther King Jr.

Monday, January 20
National Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

9 a.m. – noon., various locations in the Alliance community
Through a variety of planned service projects, volunteers will assist many organizations around the Alliance community, giving them the opportunity to improve the lives of others. The event is organized annually by Mount Union’s Ralph and Mary Regula Center for Public Service and Civic Engagement. All participants will receive a free T-shirt and lunch.

Tuesday, January 22
MLK Jr. Presentation by Diversity Council
11:10 a.m., East Room, Hoover-Price Campus Center

Members of Mount Union’s Diversity Council will discuss the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the impact that he and other key figures had on the civil rights movement.

Wednesday, January 23
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Said Sewell, assistant provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College of Undergraduate Studies, Kent State University

7 p.m., Myers Sanctuary, Dewald Chapel
