Dr. Robert Ekey Named 2013 Great Teacher

April 25, 2013

ALLIANCE, Ohio — The University of Mount Union has named Alliance resident Dr. Robert Ekey, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Physics, as the 2013 Great Teacher. The award was presented on Tuesday, April 23 at Mount Union’s annual Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.

A 1999 magna cum laude graduate of Dickinson College, Ekey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics. He went on to earn Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in physics from Bryn Mawr College.

Ekey has been a member of the Mount Union faculty since 2009. He is the chair of the Campus Life Committee and is involved with the Collaborative for Excellence in Teaching and Learning. He is also a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Physical Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

“Thanks to my students – I do this for you,” Ekey said upon receiving the honor. “I have loved watching you grow and achieve.”

When Ekey first arrived on campus in 2009, he said, “My goal as a teacher is to encourage and enable students to achieve a mastery of physics and to spark their curiosity about its many amazing aspects.”

In addition to his involvement on and off campus, Ekey is an avid researcher with a number of published works, presentations and conference sessions to his credit. His research interests include the structure and dynamics of small molecules and atoms, physics education research including inquiry based pedagogies and acoustical design and human processing of sound. Ekey received the 2012 Excellence in Education Award sponsored by Ohio Magazine.

“My nominee is a professor who is always willing to help any student in any area of science,” one student nominator said of Ekey. “He goes above and beyond the expectations of your typical professor by helping students who are not even in his own classes. He also motivates me and other students to take on more challenging work and research outside of the classroom.”

The Great Teacher Award, initiated in 1962, is sponsored by the Mount Union Alumni Association to recognize excellence in teaching. Ekey was chosen by a selection committee consisting of the officers of the senior class, the two past recipients of the Great Teacher Award, the president and immediate past president of the Alumni Association and the president of the National Cabinet of Mount Union Women.
