Dr. Sudhir Kaul

Title: Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Teaches:
Mechanical Engineering

Career
I always liked motorcycles when I was a kid. When I was in high school, I wanted to study something that would allow me to design a motorcycle. I came to know that studying mechanical engineering would be the best option.

Before Mount Union
I’ve served as an engineer for the Harley Davidson Motor Company, Hero Briggs & Stratton Corporation and Herion Fluidtronic, all where I specialized in design and development.

Professional Accomplishments
Receiving the Outstanding Graduate Student Award while pursuing my doctoral degree was a proud accomplishment for me. I also feel very proud when I see a motorcycle in a parking lot that contains parts that were designed by me.

Teaching Style
I make every attempt to relate class content to practical applications in order to motivate students. I also try to challenge students in order to push their intellectual capabilities.

Interesting Research
I have recently been working on dynamics of fracture in order to understand diagnostics and control of fracture. I have also been working on the use of smart materials in active suspension systems.

Best Part of Teaching
Teaching is very rewarding because I can see the intellectual growth of a student change over the semester, which is very satisfying. I also enjoy research since it keeps me updated about the latest trends in my fields of interest and also stimulates my interest in new areas of study.

van den Eynden
I like van den Eynden. It has a cozy feel to it and hosts many international visitors who come to Mount Union. I like to interact with many of these visitors as much as I can.

Unique Mount Union
Low student-to-faculty ratio and the dedication of the faculty to academic excellence make Mount Union a unique place.

Work After College
A focus on overall development in addition to the pursuit of academics gives Mount Union students an edge in their endeavors after they graduate.

Research Interests
My research interests include: structural dynamics and control, vibration isolation and control, dynamic modeling and meta-modeling, motorcycle dynamics, dynamic fracture mechanics.
