Dr. Tamara Daily to Present Faculty Lecture

October 2, 2012

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Dr. Tamara Daily, dean of the division of social sciences and professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Mount Union, will present the Faculty Lecture at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 17 in Tolerton and Hood Hall, Room 100. The title of her lecture is The Other CSI Effect.

According to Daily, the primetime show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation has brought about concern amongst officials. Many feel jurors in the courtroom might expect the same “forensic magic” that is projected in the show, but Daily’s research explores another “CSI Effect” that has nothing to do with forensic science.

“My research over the past several years has concerned the impact of these negative portrayals on attitudes toward people with mental illness,” Daily said.

Originally from Sunbury, Ohio, Daily earned a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. She also earned a master’s and doctoral degrees in psychology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research interests include the stigma associated with people with mental illness, the use of first person narratives in teaching psychology, stakeholder perceptions of access to the mental health system and mindfulness.

Daily is a recipient of the 2010 Morgan Impact Award for Innovation and the Recognition Award for Contributions to Students, an award sponsored by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Parents Association. She is a member of the American Psychological Association and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Each year, a member of the University of Mount Union faculty is selected to give a special lecture relating to interesting or important developments in his or her own field or exploring matters of general concern to the faculty.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations and University Activities at (330) 823-2030 or alumni@mountunion.edu.
