Associate Professor of Economics

Nobody is left behind; I try to teach the material in a level which fits the most.

Education

B.A., English, Beijing Foreign Studies University, China
M.A., Economics, State University of New York at Binghamton
Ph.D., Economics, University of Texas at Austin

Healthcare

Healthcare is an interesting and growing field. With the baby boomers reaching the retirement age, there are so many opportunities in this field.

Professional Accomplishment

My proudest professional accomplishment is the publication of my book Dynamics of Health and Employment: Theory, Evidence and Policy Implications.

Teaching Style

There are three points to my teaching style. The first is to put theory into practice. For example, in Introduction to Macroeconomics, each student must complete a news analysis that is related to the course. They have to use the economic theories they learn from this class to analyze the news and present it to the class. The second is that nobody is left behind. I try to teach the material in a level which fits the most. I give students a lot of worksheets to do in class to make sure they have opportunities to practice and understand the materials to move on. I also give some challenging questions and exercises for those stronger students. Thirdly, I encourage interdisciplinary learning. For example, in Comparative Economic Systems, students need to know not only economics, but also history, politics, religion and culture of different countries in order to understand the difference of economic systems.

Interesting Research

My research paper “Measuring the Wage Effects of Obesity” has been published in the Journal of Academy of Business and Economics. I started this research in 2008 and did a presentation at a faculty research forum. This research paper studied and identified the negative relationship between BMI (Body Mass Index) and wages rates using the MEPS (Medical Expenditure Panel Survey) data.

Favorite Part of the Job

Knowing I can positively impact so many young people’s lives and provide them with the knowledge they need to succeed in the future are the best parts of my job.

EBB

I like the Engineering and Business Building (EBB) because my office is located in this building, and it is quite modern compared to other buildings.
