It is truly a big family here. It’s easy to make friends in no time, and I noticed from the very beginning of my freshman year that I felt a part of the Mount Union family.

MY EXCEPTIONAL STORY
More than just swimming
I was initially recruited as a swimmer to come to Mount Union, but I also knew people who had attended the University as well. After checking it out online, I could tell that Mount had the major and minors that I was interested in as well as many other opportunities available to students, such as extracurricular activities and a ton of internship opportunities. Once I visited the campus, I absolutely fell in love with it and knew immediately that I could see myself here. Talking to students on campus further solidified my choice.
A big family
It is truly a big family here. It’s easy to make friends in no time, and I noticed from the very beginning of my freshman year that I felt a part of the Mount Union family. I can’t leave my residence hall without saying hello to a friend on campus or to one of my professors who is walking by. The professors here truly do get to know their students and care about their well being. I’ve never had a professor who wasn’t willing to bend over backwards to help me out in a class as long as I was willing to put in the effort to try my best. And, they all know my name!
Hands-on experience
So far, my favorite hands-on experience has been in my Introduction to Journalism class where we tried to solve a problem on campus through interviewing people and writing a news article about it. I was able to sit down and interview Pat Heddleston, vice president of business affairs and treasurer of Mount Union. I spoke with him about the future of Mount Union and what types of commercial businesses will be coming to our campus in the near future. It was really exciting to get a first-hand look at these future developments before most of the other students on campus!
Knack for writing
I chose communication as my major because I knew I had a knack for writing, speaking to others in a public setting and communicating one-on-one in order to get my ideas across effectively. I like being able to share information with others and help them understand something. Plus, I find it very interesting to learn how and why people communicate with each other the way they do, and I look forward to having a career that allows me to find the best way to share information with a certain demographic.
Love for sociology
My favorite class so far has been Introduction to Sociology with Dr. Muller. I knew that I loved communication, but I had no idea that I would develop such an interest in sociology until I took this course. It was the sole influence in me choosing sociology as a minor. The course was interesting to me from day one, and I picked up on the topics very quickly because they were so intriguing and applicable to everyday life.
