Faculty Members Receive Education Award

ALLIANCE, Ohio — Five faculty members from the University of Mount Union are recipients of the Excellence in Education Award sponsored by Ohio Magazine.

Dr. Robert Ekey, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy; Dr. Patricia Boehm, associate professor and chair of the Department of Music; Dr. Helen Muga, assistant professor of civil engineering; Dr. Scott Mason, professor of chemistry and director of the Pre-health Program; and Sharon Luke, associate professor, director and chair of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, were formally recognized for their achievements and dedication to teaching in Ohio Magazine’s special section “Excellence in Education” in the magazine’s December issue.

“Having five faculty members recognized for their exceptional teaching is a testament to the high quality education that Mount Union provides,” said Dr. Richard F. Giese, president of Mount Union. “Our faculty members are not only experts in their fields, but they also go above and beyond to form strong relationships with students as they prepare for a meaningful future.”

“We are proud to have so many excellent faculty members who provide a quality educational experience for Mount Union students,” said Dr. Patricia Draves, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the University of Mount Union.

BoehmUnder Dr. Patricia Boehm’s direction, students achieve a high level of excellence through a combination of performance, research and observation. As a result of her reflective teaching style, music students are challenged daily to excel as musicians first and become inspired to teach and perform the musical arts.

Boehm earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in music education from Kent State University, a Master of Music degree in opera production from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Music degree in voice and opera from Jacksonville University.

EkeyDr. Robert Ekey encourages students to be life-long learners and hard-working individuals. He creates an environment where various learning experiences are combined to achieve a deep conceptual and mathematical understanding. Through personal interaction and projects, he develops the student’s individuality and strengths for a meaningful career and fruitful life.

Ekey earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics and a Master of Arts degree in physics from Bryn Mawr College and a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Dickinson College.

LukeSharon Luke, MSHS, PA-C, instills in students the importance of being skilled medical practitioners and compassionate advocates for the patient. She also prepares students with medical decision-making and problem-solving skills that are critical in the clinical healthcare setting.

Luke earned a Master of Science degree in health sciences from Cleveland State University, an Associate of Applied Science degree in primary care from Cuyahoga Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in natural sciences from the University of Akron.

MasonDr. Scott Mason understands the importance of practical experience when guiding students in the classroom. Having taught both new and experienced scholars, he has worked to develop laboratory experiments for several courses and has successfully researched multiple scientific areas to increase his and his student’s knowledge of chemistry.

Mason, a summa cum laude graduate of Mount Union, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of South Carolina.

MugaBy examining engineering challenges close to campus and abroad, Dr. Helen Muga has helped students explore engineering projects that provide an international perspective. She’s also passionate about exposing students to research early in their academic careers, which is why research-based projects are incorporated into every course she teaches.

Muga earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in environmental engineering and a Master of Science degree in environmental engineering from Michigan Technological University, a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering from Curtin University of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the University of Papua New Guinea.
