FERPA Explanation and Waiver
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 protects a student’s educational record. Student records can only be released to anyone other than the student (including parents) with a waiver that is completed for a specific case or in compliance with the federal exceptions. One of these federal exceptions is for parental/Guardian notification in cases of alcohol or drug violations when the student is under 21 at the time of the incident. Please refer to the student handbook on page 73 for the statement on how this exception is utilized at Mount Union.
