November 07, 2014

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The University of Mount Union’s Department of Music will present a Flute Ensemble and Woodwind Quintet concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11 in Presser Recital Hall.

Members of the Flute Ensemble include junior music education major Allison Bates of Minerva, Ohio; junior early childhood education and music major Rachel Beach of Bolivar, Ohio; freshman Brittany Daily of Canton, Ohio; sophomore biology major Julia Fide of Lorain, Ohio; Lisa Price, junior biology major Sarah Hohenadel of Mogadore, Ohio; senior music performance major Brianna Searing of Fort Wayne, Indiana; junior early childhood education major Mary Anne Snyder of Orrville, Ohio and freshman Nadya Stratton of Poland, Ohio. The group will perform a Shaker folk song and pieces by J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy and Jack Jordan.

The University of Mount Union Flute Ensemble features both music majors and non-majors that rehearse weekly during fall and spring semesters.

The ensemble performs regularly in recital at Mount Union, as well as in area schools, clubs, retirement homes, and churches. They are regular performers at the Central Ohio, Greater Cleveland, Dana and Northeast Ohio Flute Festivals.

The Woodwind Quintet will perform pieces by Robert Washburn, Richard E. Brown, Karen Gorton and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The ensemble includes Rachel Beach on flute; freshman Jenna Bluedorn of Youngstown, Ohio and freshman Parker Peterson of North Bloomfield, Ohio on oboe; sophomore music education major Christopher Jones of Solon, Ohio on clarinet; sophomore music education major Jason Lopez of Little Falls, New Jersey on horn; and junior biology and French major Brynne Cross of Dellroy, Ohio on bassoon.

The woodwind quintet is open to all students on campus who play the flute, oboe, clarinet, horn or bassoon. The chamber ensemble explores and performs various styles of woodwind quintet literature each semester. The group meets as a class once a week with the instructor and carries out independent rehearsals to further develop their chamber music skills of playing without a conductor.

The program will finish with the Flute Ensemble accompanied by the Vocal Ensemble, which includes senior music education major Kacey Cooper of Deerfield, Ohio; senior music education major Demi Lohr of Ravenna, Ohio; sophomore music education major Jesse Reed of Diamond, Ohio; and senior information systems major Jake Rogers of Alliance, Ohio. These groups will perform a traditional French carol and pieces by George Bizet and R.W. Lowry.

The concert is free and open to the public. Presser Recital Hall is located inside Cope Music Hall on the corner of Union Avenue and Simpson Street on Mount Union’s campus. For more information, call Mount Union’s Department of Music at (330) 823-2180.
