Fraternities and Sororities Receive Awards

September 11, 2011

Greek life at the University of Mount Union continues to remain strong. In fact, four fraternity and sorority chapters from Mount Union won or were recognized with top honors this summer at their respective conventions.

Alpha Delta Pi was the recipient of the Golden Lion at Alpha Delta Pi’s 160th Grand Convention in June. The Gamma Theta chapter was also recognized in a variety of other areas for their outstanding achievements throughout 2010-2011 including excellence in philanthropy, new member education, scholarship, finance, legacy, recruitment and panhellenic relations.

For the second year in a row, Alpha Tau Omega achieved True Merit Status. The Alpha Nu chapter was also recognized for their excellence in recruitment, rituals, new member education, finance, leadership and campus involvement.

This summer, Alpha Xi Delta was the recipient of the Xi Achievement Award at the 49th Alpha Xi Delta Convention. The Gamma Chapter at Mount Union is one of only three chapters across the country (out of a total of 112 chapters) to achieve this honor. The chapter also received the Financial Efficiency Certificate of Merit, the Elizabeth G. Van Buskirk New Member Group GPA Award, the 2011 Academic Achievement Excellence Award and the Alpha Xi Delta Senior Class Foundation Gift for 100% Participation. In addition, Kelly Emery, a senior of Avon Lake, received the Baker – Blish Alpha Xi Delta Foundation scholarship.

Phi Kappa Tau was the runner-up for the Maxwell Trophy this summer. This is the second time in two years that the Epsilon chapter has been recognized as a Maxwell Founders Four Scroll finalist. The chapter was also recognized for excellence in academics, administration, philanthropy and community service.

In addition, the overall GPA of fraternities and sororities combined at Mount Union was again above the all campus average for the 16th consecutive semester. Steady growth in membership and increases in philanthropic donations and community service hours performed helped to make it a successful year for Greek life at Mount Union.
